Harmony I.
Major and minor scales and keys; intervals; key relationship;
triads, seventh chords and inversions; dominant harmonies;
modulation; close and open harmony; composition of simple
hymn tunes. Ear training to establish a fixed pitch and the acquisition
of related pitch. Sight singing and keyboard harmony.
Harmony II.
Close and open harmony continued; unusual progressions
of dominant seventh and ninth chords and suspensions. Ear
training and keyboard harmony continued.
Composition.
Study of motive, phrase, periodic, thematic development,
Melodic figuration, accompaniment, primary and composite song
forms. Composition of a rondo. Original work.
APPRECIATION AND HISTORY OF MUSIC.
Primitive music, its characteristics; primitive instruments;
origin of music. Ancient and semi-civilized music with outlines
of the music of China, India, Babylonia, Assyria, Israel and
Egypt. Music of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Opera, oratorio,
organ, violin, harpsichord and clavichord, throughout the
eighteenth century. Music of the Romantic and Modern schools
and composers. Music in America. Essays and biographies required
throughout the course.
CERTIFICATES.
To receive a certificate a pupil must have satisfied the college
entrance requirements, completed one year of college work and
two years in Harmony, one in History of Music, and one in Composition
and Counterpoint.
ADVANCED WORK
More advanced courses will be given as a continuation of the
work okutlined above to meet the requirements of the individual
student.
