delivery, theory and practice in the fundamentals of oral expression,
-voice technique, pronunciations, enunciation, pitch, inflection, emphasis,
time, phrasing, gesturing, etc.; lessons in the vocal interpretation
of standard literary and oratorical selections. This is not a
course in traditional elocution, but in clear, intelligent, sympathetic,
and effective reading and speaking. It aims to qualify teachers of
oral English as well as to introduce the beginner to the speech arts.
This course will aid teachers in training students for the declamation
contests of the University Interscholastic League. Text: Shurter's
Public Speaking.
COURSE B. (f. w.)-Argumentation and Debate. A study of the
principles of argumentation-analysis, evidence, proof, refutation, and

(s)-Extempore Speaking. In this course a study will be made
of the extempore speech, the manner of its delivery, and the audiences
to which it is to be spoken. Daily practice will be given on assigned
subjects previously mastered and outlined, though the language of the
speeches is not memorized. Unusual vocal defects and marked mannerisms
will be corrected privately. This course aims to cultivate in
the student a fluent, forceful, and effective presentation of his own
thoughts to others. The power to speak to a purpose, clearly, distinctly,
gracefully, and forcefully, is an open sesame to leadership.
