SYNOPSIS
Threo weekB after a cream col
orod roadster had boon found
wrecked In the sea at the foot of
a cliff a girl calling herself Anne
Cuehlng appears at the deBert
town Mareton She has bought
sight unseen a ranch located thirty
miles awayt Barry Duane her
noaroBt neighbor and his man
Boone Petry procure a rollablu woman
for her and in Darrya car
loaded down with supplies they
start acrosB the desert In Mar
ston her reticence has aroused suspicion
Harry and Anno become
more than nolghbois and when
Anno is lost In the hills and rescued
by Barry each realizes that
something more than friendship
exists between them
NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY
My greatgieatgiandfathcr built
it and Duanes havo lived in it
over since I suppose it will have
to go out of the family some day
unless I make my million He
hesitated Mother is very reserved
She doesnt gho heiseU out
readily But that will bo all right
as soon as she kricws you better
Anne wanted to cry out fiercely
Sho isnt jiibt reserved She > i cold
and selfish and ambitious and she
hates me But she nodded wisely
instead
Your darling Ho tossed her
hat on the bed and pulled her
toward him Nancy Im getting
madder about jou every day of my
lifeSho
Sho gave herself up to that
Mn Duanes dinner hour was
fashionably late Barry had already
dressed and gone down
Anno had just finished her own
dressing and stood critically inspecting
the result Barry had
insisted on staying over in town
long enough for her to buy
several new gowns Anne knew
win he had done it One evening
gown was not enough for Gran
leigh summer called for sports
olotho She was not to meet
critical eyes unprepared Anne
smiled at heiself in the gla s
thinking absently of the moiul sup
poit of clothes especially when
other women were involved
Sho switched the lights off and
parted the curtains at the neaiest
window Darkness wts falling
Beyond the hedge a man walked
slowly turning his head at each
passing car She wnt < hed him idly
wondering why bo was loiteiing
along liko that
He stopped to light a cigarette
A match spurted into flame and
the flaro lit his face
Anne shrank hurriedly back into
the room dragging the heavj cui
tains together This was ghastly
What could possibly bring him to
thib part of the country again
straight to Granlelgh
I mustnt let it get mo It wont
do Ive got to see him somehow
There was a tap on tho door It
was Matthews
Mr Barry wishcE we to tell you
that Miss Pendleton l here
So tho Pendleton girl waa here
W already Mm Anno gavo a leat
quick glance in the mirror and
wont slowly downstairs
Anne went down with unhurried
grace half smlllni
Barry lookod up a quick flash
of pride in his answering smile
Cleo Pendleton lookod up also
Heros Nancyi now
Cleo slipped from tho arm of th1
chair and mot Anne halfway
Im Cloo Pendleton I wanted
to bo tho flist to moot you I hope
you will liko mo a lot because Im
ono of Bairys old friends Ive
been counting on hnvlng you here
Thats awfully nlco of you
Anno was sweet but non committal
It makes mo feel that Im not
a strangor horo after all
Oh is this your very first tiip
East Thoro was u socouds pause
I lived in tho Kutit for a while
But Ive nover boon horo bofoie
Ooh said Cleo fioftlj But I
hope youro going to stay this
tlmo Wovo all boon arguing for
years to mako Barry stay home
hut ho wont listen to us
I al ys llBten Barry grinned
at her
And then do as you please
Cleo shrugged a vctulant shoul
dor and then laughed All right

wave Barry chuckled silently
Shos an irresponsible imp He
called after Matthews Just returning
down the hall Who was that
Matthews
A man looking for a Job sir A
chauffeur He was quite insistent
about seeing ypu
1 told him MattbeWB continued
you were entirely satisfied with
the present man
Quito right He suddenly re
mombeicd something Oh Matthews
is my mother out I knocked
at her door hut there was no
answer
No sir Shes changed her
rooms to the west wing I think
sho will be in presently for dinnerOh thank you Matthews
His voice waa quite colorless
Matthows went hastily Both of
them knew that tho west wing had
not been opened for years
Anno listening idly could come
very close to guessing what had
happened And this was only hor
first day In Barrys home
Meantime Cleo Pendleton who
was not in the least irresponsible
huddled sulkily back in the limou
sino
Hurryi lm late she snapped
and tho car swept out of the drive
so fast that a man crossing the
pavement sprang aside hastily He
scowled and took an envelope from
his pocket and wrote down tin
license number
lrlends and rich ones he
thought Ill try my luck there
Damn it Ill get a job somewhere
Im going to stick here until something
brenks
Cleo bad not soon him She was
in a whirl of angry thought
Shos no more a ranch girl than
I am unless shos ono of
awfully rich ones The way
talks and the way she wears her
clothes And I thought I could
mako him ashamed of hir
The soft lips pursed sullenly
I picked up a point 01 two anyway
Shed lather be ailed Anne
and she hadnt told Barry that
In the next few weeks they
danced and dined lunched
motoied and iliihod fiom one engagement
to anothei The telephone
tinkled incessantly
It was fun but sometimes Anno
was achlngly homesick for the sun
seemed to have so little time fo
each olhoi hero
Not once In those flying days
bad Anno caught a glimpse of the
man who had loitered in front of
the house thnt night She watched
disappeared It could she decided
havo been pure coincidence Jim
had probably gone on before this
to tho gayer haunts where he was
moro at home
Cleo Pendleton was In and out
constantly and at all hours She
amused Barry and in her kitten
impish way managed to monopolize
him a good deal
Baby vamp Anne thought
scornfully They more Bhe saw of
Cleo tho loss she cared for her
but Intimacyv seemed to be thrust
upon hor
Anno wondered if Mrs Duane
hold tho check book as well as
tho household control That would
bo embarrassing for Barry sho
would havo to wait until he told
her What sho needed to do first she
told hoiself was not to mako trouble
but to coax Barrys mother to
like hor
What Anno could not know was
how ruinously the secret hope of
years had crashed when Barry hn > l
sent that sudden word of his mar
rlago Mrs Dunne was a proud and
strongwilled woman hating poverty
nnd all thnt it meant Barry
could havo married Cleo Pendle
ton and Cleo would have brought
him wealth and lolsuie Mrs
Duano hate the very name of
Eagle Lake
Tho knowledge of this deep
rooted bitterness camo to Anno
sharply Sho had tried to bridge
tho recurring silences of a toto a
if you wlvt toll mo But I liko toto jnci DJ7 talking for oneo of
Nnncjj better than 1 do you Youll
let mo call you Nancy wont you
Why of course My namo ioal
ly is Anno not that it makes any
difforenco
Barry calls you Nancy I Hko
it bettor too But I must trot dutifully
back beforo Dad calls out tho
resorvcR
Out In tho hall thoro woro voices
A door had oponed
Goodbyo Nancy Vm going to
aomo morning and
stop for you
vvoU dash around and do things
Cleo wbtsked out with a iareloss
Bomothlng less impersonal than
dinners and minor Itoms of Grnn
lelgh novvs
You havo nover been to the
Porch have jou It is liko a benu
is the name and the comparatively
small block of stock which my
mother still holds Tor the sake
of the name 1 have a nominal office
The real head is Gage
Sho moved suddenly Who
John Gage Ho was Uncle Bobs
lnd chief creditor and all sorts of a
millionaire
She did not answer Barry was
looking soberly ahead of him and
did not notice hei fiozon stillness
I havo the Western lands
waahed Junipcro Sho and Barry I1anv wcnt on which barely meet
their own oveihead as things stand
now and just enough income foi
our personal expenses here Sometimes
Im tempted to throw the
whole thing up and get a job Any
job It might bo better than hang
for him but he seemed to have nK iround like this halfway be
twocn a vlsionajy and a lounge
lizard
Youro not 1 wont have you
calling yoursolf names like that
And youre not going to give all
your hopes up either She gave
his shoulders a furious little shake
almost in tears for him If things
aro liko that wo cant afford to
livo in OranlelRh Youre not real
lv Tioeded here nnd we could go
1 k and make the ranch pay nnd
save a lot of useless expenses I
d It mind being poor
I know you dont you good
little sport but thoies a serious
hitch He looked uncomfortable
again a little on tho defensive
When tho crash came my mother
was prostrated and I gave hoi
my word that I would stay East
nt least six months out of every
year as long as she lived Sorry
you married mo Nancy
Nover She hugged him impulsively
Dont you dare glvo It
up Its coming all right You wait
and see
But her licvirt was heavy
Anno heard tho swish of a enr
coming In tho drlvo
Usually Cloo came in tho road
Htor prefenlng to drlvo herself
but today a long groy limousino
waited thoro A chauffeur stood
by tho door Ho was a now man
Anno looked toward him casually
and hor oyjes stayed For nn
instant thoy Boomed to cling to
him In froon recognition Tho
chauffeur slipped easily into his
own seat Thoro had not boon n
glimmer of surprise in his face
only a cool watchfulness

THE TULIA HERALD
Cleos eyes widened This was
too good to bo true These two
know each othci Barrys wife and
a chauffeur
I dltchod tho roadster > ester
day so Im giving It n rest until
the parent stops roaring
Cleo sat watching Hairy s vvlfo
with bright slanting glnneis Anne
talked when sho had to listened
to Cleo commented and even
laughed but now and then hoi
hands moved nervously In her lap
nnd her eyes went back to that
tiful mountain camp You mUBt smartly uniformed figure In front
visit us thoro next summer
I havo never been interested in
tho place 1 hope now that my son
Is married he will definitely give
up that kind of HfV
Oh but his heart is in it Id
bo willing to soo him sell every
thing olso that ho owned and live
In a hut with him If ho could
rulso tho money for the dam that
wayMrs
Mrs Duanes thin cheeks Hushed
slightly
I have no desiio to see my son
living in a hut Bany has ptacti
calljj nothing to sell except those
worthless Western lands If his
mother has anj Influence with
him he will novel go thoio again
Anne Bat very stiaight I see
sho said softly You have made
It quite clear to me Thank you
A declaration of war had been
made and answered
Anno told Bany some of It late
that evening anxious to convey a
hint of warning
You see Hurry explained in
that careful way my uncle was
really the head of the Duano Mills
My father had died years before
whon 1 was a baby and Uncle Bob
had bought in a fruther shaie
from my mother Fathers will left
overything to her Uncle Bob was
unmarried aud meant to pass on
tho control of the mills to mo
Anne mm mured something she
scarcely knew what So Mis
Duano did hold tho check hook
Uncle Bob was different from
tho rest of the Duanes His health
wasnt good and ono Match aftei
a bad attack of pneumonia he
went off for a year in tho West
the When ho got into the Pinos Val
Hu ley scheme it was easy to think
of the mills us a solid asset to
back something better He was so
sure of success that he financed it
entirely himself Ho didnt take
anybody olsos money but of
course there wore lepercussions
The crash came and all that
shed lived East Caught that ono ronains of the Duane ownership
from him And something bothered
her about the windows but that
sounds cray Tho funniest thing is
that she looks familial to me Just
a little familial
Tho tennis finals wore on when
they nrrlved It wor good tennis
but Anno found her eyes wandering
off toward a wide arc of paik
oil cars What wm Jim oiling here
When it was over Cleo lingered
cars What was Jim doing here
slipped ahead to where the limousine
stood
Jim I must see you alone Just
as soon as possible
Yes w ought to have n lotto
talk about Thj e was a leer
in the gum led tone He opened
tho door for her without the faintest
change of expiesslon I gmsh
you know whole to find me
Picos light steps wire behind
them Ill take vou homo in jilen
ty of time for dinner but I wnnt
to show you something first
Outside of laying violent hands
on her there was no getting lid
of Cleo once sho started to have
her own way
