For several years the college employed a visiting Director
for the School of Music. This visitation only once
or twice each year was found inadequate. Also the department
has grown to such proportions that a resident Director
has been appointed.
Mr. H. C. Nearing will devote his entire time to this
department and teach the more advanced pupils in Piano
and Pipe Organ.
Mr. Nearing comes to us in September from Bryan,
Texas, having been elected Director of the School of Music
at the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees in June.
Both he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian
Church, he having had charge of the choir in Bryan, from
which church we have very flattering reports of his most
unusual success in that city. Mr. Nearing is a graduate
of the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Postgraduate
of the Lachmund Conservatory, Steinway Hall,
New York, and has studied under Sherwood, Boguslawski
and Lachmund, a pupil of F. Liszt. He comes to Daniel
Baker with rich experience of seven years of successful
teaching experience. His wife will assist him in piano instruction. In the Fall of 1914 Miss Mabel Harlan took charge
of the Violin Department in Daniel Baker College. Miss
Harlan studied violin in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for
nine years, being graduated from the Colorado College
School of Music under Mrs. George M. Howe, in 1914. She
also studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and composition
with Dean Edward D. Hale of the School of Music. Miss
Harlan was two years prominently identified with the best
musical interests of her city, taking active part, as soloist,74
