HISTORIC
PHOTO
A picture is worth a thousand words, the
adage runs. But no number of words can match
a striking photograph. The camera can record
an almost infinite amount of detail and when
used by a skillful photographer, the results can
be an image that touches the eyes and the
emotions as well.
The Texas Historical Foundation is sponsoring
the Texas Photography Project to help
preserve the photographic heritage of the state.
Underwritten by a grant from E.I. du Pont de
Nemours and Co., and its energy subsidiary
CONOCO, Inc., the results of the project will
be three major publications, and a monetary
contribution to the Capitol Restoration
Project.
The first book, A Photographic Portrait
of Texas, will be published to celebrate theTexas Sesquicentennial in 1986. This volume
will be a collection of 250-300 historic photographs
gathered to record the diversity of Texas
life during the past one hundred and fifty years.
The second volume will be a contemporary
documentation of Texas made by fifteen
photographers commissioned by the Foundation.
Both volumes will reflect the themes of
historical change and historical persistence,
and will contain introductory essays by noted
historians. The two volume set will be edited
by Martha A. Sandweiss, Curator of Photography,
Amon Carter Museum, Ft. Worth; with
the editorial assistance of Roy Flukinger,
Curator of Photography, Harry Ransom Humanities
Research Center, University of
Texas, Austin; and Anne Tucker, Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston. The Project Advisory Group is comprised
of William P. Wright, Jr., Vice President of
THF; David Murrah, Director of the Southwest
Collection, Texas Tech University; Archie
McDonald, Professor of History and Outgoing
Chairman Texas Committee for the Humanities,
Stephen F. Austin University; Karen
Johnson, Special Assistant to Governor Mark
White; and CONOCO's Tom DeCola, Director,
Public Relations, Petroleum Headquarters,
North America.
Both books will be published by the University
of Texas Press and will be available
before Christmas of 1985.
The third publication will be a Union
Guide to Photographic collections in Texas.
This reference guide to Texas photography has
never been published, and will serve as a signif8
