Local leaders have come to appreciate Georgetown's historic
character as an asset that does more than simply enhance
the city's charm for the enjoyment of its current inhabitants.
It also draws potential businesses, residents, and
tourists who add needed revenues to the city's economy.
Just like the fictional characters in ABC's "Doodles,"
people today continue to yearn for a place where the best
of the past is revered and allowed to survive for future
generations.
Many preservation challenges lie ahead as Georgetown
moves toward the 1990s. Historic structures will continue
to be threatened by demolition, removal, or neglect. New
construction, increased traffic flow, and economic and environmental
factors all will place increasing demands on the
city's inner area.
Georgetown must strive to balance a respect for its natural
and architectural resources with an aggressive effort to
provide up-to-date facilities and amenities to its citizens.
The city is actively arming itself with the preservation tools
it will need to retain its valuable and irreplaceable historic
fabric.11
