artistic descendents of Fry in the 1980s
wrestle with the dilemma of money versus
professional integrity. It is bittersweet to
read about Mike Kinsey, a maker of pizza by
day and music by night, while his pal, Paul
Minor, serves hamburgers until sundown
and rock music until the wee hours. Both
fellows know they can make more money
playing rock classics at fraternity houses,
but they can grow only by writing and
playing their own stuff, for far less money.
Older students also merit portraits.
George Nichols and Darrell Stanley left
long careers in the Air Force and graduated
valedictorians. Their stories tell how they
brought to the campus experiences from
the Korean and Vietnam wars, and key
duty on the Distant Early Warning Line in
Alaska during the Cuban Missile Crisis of
1963. Another student, Sal Marrongelli, of
IBM, prepared a long paper so technical
that it took his teachers six months to find
anyone qualified to evaluate it.
Dr. Hughes's special interest in oral
history shows in his conversational writingstyle. He insists he is not elevating a St.
Edward's elite. "I know three dozen characters
equally impressive; there are scores I
don't know about." He feels there are
people with tales to be told everywhere,
and with a tape recorder, a few oral history
skills and a journalist's nose, they can be
told. He makes it sound simpler than it is -
but how effectively he tells a good story!
The final section, "Remembrances of
Brother Hilarion," stimulates interest in
the well-loved teacher, administrator and
artist, even if we were not in that fortunate
group of loyal friends. The last five tributes
introduce new writers, all with exciting
narrative styles. From laughing to crying
with them, I gained a vision of a man I wish
I had known. The line drawings, cartoons
and photographs accent the copy well. St.
Edward's Portraits, beyond its depiction of
people and events through oral histories,
reflects a delightful picture of life on a small
college campus in Texas.
