Perennial Garden Color is a wonderful
book which can be enjoyed in numerous
ways: as a gardening tool and resource directed
specifically toward Texas gardeners,
an artbook and for the sheer enjoyment of
its beauty. I had been anticipating Perennial
Garden Color for several months, having
had the pleasure of working with both
Taylor Publishing and Dr. Welch on the
historic gardens cover story in the Spring'89 issue of Heritage. But I was not prepared
for the impact of the elaborate four-color
photographs, rich in color density, that
make up such a large part of the presentation.
The vivid photographs combined
with good layout and design of the text
make Perennial Garden Color reader friendly.
And the binding is designed to stay open
on your lap, a real plus for the student
gardener.
Dr. Welch is a professionally trained
landscape architect and horticulturist
whose writing reflects his "hands on" approach
to gardening. His expertise and
relaxed style make this book appealing to
beginners as well as seasoned gardeners. No
tedious reading here; the writing is both
witty and informative.
Perennial Garden Color is comprised of
three sections. "The Perennial Garden"
describes what plants to use, where and
how to plant them, and the basic steps of
garden layout and development. "Perennials
for the Garden" is the most comprehensive
section, listing plants alphabetically
by genus and species as well as by the more
familiar common names. "Old Garden
Roses and Companion Plants" offersinstructions on propagating roses from cuttings.
An appendix lists many mail order
sources for bulbs, plants and seeds.
When planning a new garden, Welch
emphasizes the importance of keeping in
mind design concepts concerning the arrangement
of plants. As I became fascinated
with this idea of arranging perennials
through the use of color, texture, line, form
and pattern into a composition, I realized
this was yet another application of all I had
learned in college as an art major. Welch
was barking up the same tree, so to speak.
I must confess that my own experience
as a gardener is limited to weeding the
vegetables which my parents grew on the
East Coast. Since my sister, brother and I
were often sent out to weed in lieu of
television watching or as a punishment for
some misdeed, I did not view gardening as
a particularly enjoyable activity. I am
actually a bit mystified about gardening
altogether and have called upon many a
landscape service to dig in the hard Texas
clay to plant flower beds, rose bushes and
the like. I have blamed my bad luck as a
gardener on the sun, on the soil, or on the
voracious bugs. This book provided aA GARDEN OF DELIGHTS
