THF Director Honored
John Ben Shepperd, a long-time supporter
of the Texas Historical Foundation,
was honored for his many contributions
to the state and to the nation with
a seventy-fourth birthday celebration in
Odessa October 19. Permian Basin and
other state dignitaries spoke of his many
services to civic activity in Texas, and the
Odessa City Council unveiled new signs
naming John Ben Shepperd Parkway in
that city. Shepperd served as Texas Attorney
General, secretary of state, president
of the United States Jaycees, Texas
administrator of the National Youth
Administration, among many other
functions.
Shepperd was appointed to the Texas
State Historical Survey Committee in1961 and served as the president of the
Committee and the Foundation from
1963 to 1966. He has also been a member
of the board of directors of the Foundation
for many years. John Ben Shepperd's
contribution to the Foundation and to
the cause of historical preservation in
Texas cannot be measured. The time of
his service has come to be referred to as
the "John Ben Shepperd years." Because
of the energy and enthusiasm which he
infused into the program and the many
accomplishments of that period directly
attributable to his initiative, THF joins in
the salute to John Ben Shepperd. And we
wish to especially mark the numerous
important, lasting contributions he has
made to the preservation of our Texas
heritage.Coming
in the July 1990
edition of Heritage
The Texas Historical Foundation in partnership
with the Center for Historical
Resources College of Architecture,
Texas A&M University will publish the
first edition of its annual refereed journal
on historic preservation
There has long been a recognized need
for additional opportunities for those
who study historic preservation to publish
their findings and thoughts. Heritage
will address that need and will devote the
entire July issue to articles by recognized
scholars in the field. A prestigious review
board has been assembled representing
preservation interests across the nation,
and with this venture the Texas Historical
Foundation will go beyond the borders
of Texas to lend its support to preservation
throughout the country. This will
be an annual feature.
Watch for this issue-we think that
you will find it stimulating and informative.Elizabeth Vair, who joined the Foundation
in 1984, has accepted a position
as chief administrator for the National
Museum of Ceramic Art in Baltimore,
Maryland, and has stepped down as art
director of Heritage magazine. Prior to
July 1989, Elizabeth was managing editor
and has been the creative spirit
behind the magazine since 1985.
Under Vair's guidance the magazine
has grown into the leading popular
voice for preservation in the state
reaching not only members of the
Foundation but also numerous schools
and libraries. When she took over it
was an earnest well-meaning effort.
She was able to add the professional
patina that was needed to make it the
equal of any other Texas publication
graphically and in terms of content. She
was also responsible for our membership
solicitation program which under
her leadership more than doubled the
size of the Foundation.Elizabeth Vair and Burke, her son.
Elizabeth has made a singular contribution
to the Foundation during her
time with us, for which we thank her.
We will miss her for her talent, and will
also miss her because she was such fun
to work with.HERITAGE * WINTER 1990 33
