TEXAS SCRAPBOOK
HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE ARCHIVES OF TEXAS MUSEUMS
The Layland Museum, Cleburne
These photographs are from a series of
the construction of the federal post office
building in Cleburne during the winter of
1911-12. (The building is currently undergoing
renovations to become the new City
Hall since the post office moved to a new
location in the 1980s.) The Layland Museum
of Home Life holds these and many
others of life in Cleburne and Johnson City
in its photographic collections.
In 1907 prominent citizens of Cleburne,
the county seat of Johnson City, decided to
secure a government post office building
because postal activity had progressed to
such a great extent since the community's
beginnings in 1867. However, an appropriation
of$ 170,000 from the United States
Congress was not secured for this purpose
until 1909. Construction finally began in
September 1911.
The top image is a view of the building
with a glimpse of the elegant public areas.
The final photo shows the completed structure
for its dedication in the spring of 1912.
The Layland Museum is located at 201
North Caddo in Cleburne. Contact the
organization at (817) 645-0940.
