THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By Dr. R. Lee RodeLooking at the calendar I note with
some surprise that it is already August.
More than half of the year is now gone, and
what this means for the members and Board
of Directors of the Texas Historical Foundation
is that the organization's fundraising
auction of Texana items planned for September
20 is now less than a month away.
I hope that all of you will circle that date
on your own calendars and make plans to
be in Austin for the event. It will be held in
conjunction with the Austin Book and
Paper Show and begins at 8:00 p.m. in the
Colorado Room of Palmer Auditorium.
(The silent auction runs from noon to 8:30
p.m.) There will be a wide range of items
available at the auction from bed and breakfast
accommodations, to signed books, to
original artwork. For lovers of Texas history,
this is an event not to be missed!
We hope that all of you will choose to participate in one way
or another in this auction, which is designed to raise non-dues
revenue to continue the work of historical preservation in the
state of Texas. Those of you who are unable to attend can still take
part by requesting a copy of the catalogue of items from the
Foundation office. Bids on items will be accepted by mail prior to
the auction.
This auction is important to the future of preservation in Texas.
There is still much work that all of must do as we endeavor to save
Texas heritage, and there is no doubt that as the government
tightens its belt and pulls back some of its funding, that organizations
such as the Texas Historical Foundation will be called upon
more and more to provide financial backing for worthwhile preservation
projects. The THF Board realizes that though our support
from members is significant and very appreciated that this organization
must explore all avenues of fundraising in order to be able to
continue the important work of preservation. The Auction Committee,
under the leadership of Board Chairman John Meadows,
has worked hard and is to be commended for their contribution. In any case, the auction should be lots of
:~<a~ Afun with an auctioneer, refreshments, and
lots of Texas memorabilia. I encourage
each of you to plan to be there and to invite
your friends and anyone you know who is
interested in Texas history to attend the
September 20 event.
In other news, the Board has just returned
from its summer meeting where we
continued our goal of preserving Texas
history by facilitating a grant from the
Communities Foundation of Texas for a
documentary being produced by Frederick
A.H. Dalrymple on the life of Hallie
Crawford Stillwell, a Big Bend rancher
who is nearing 100 years of age. "Hutch"
has been chronicling Hallie's amazing life
in West Texas, and the film will soon be
ready for distribution.
Speaking of grants, the Texas Historical Foundation was honored
to be the recipient of a grant from the Hillcrest Foundation
supporting several issues of HERITAGE magazine. The magazine,
as you all know, is the Foundation's primary vehicle for disseminating
information about Texas history and preservation projects. We
are especially pleased to be able to count among our subscribers
many of the public and private schools and universities in the state.
One of the primary missions of the Texas Historical Foundation is
an ongoing public education effort, and these much-needed funds
from the Hillcrest Foundation will help insure that this important
work can continue.
Before closing, let me once again thank you for your support of
historical preservation and of THF. We would especially like to
thank those of you who made contributions above and beyond your
membership dues to the organization; those folks are listed on page
five of this issue. Also, a hearty thanks and welcome to our new
members. With everyone's help we can continue to spread our
message about the importance of preserving our past for the benefit
of future generations of Texans.
