Centennial Map of Texas. Daughters of The Republic of Texas. [Dallas]: C. M. Bumett, circa 1934
cs e souvenir map was commissioned by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
Texas independence from Mexico. The map was conceived by Curtis Pruett and published and copyrighted by C. M. Burnett for
the centennial celebrations, with 100,000 copies printed for distribution. The map originally sold for $1.25 unframed.
The map depicts the boundaries of the state of Texas rather than the imperial outline of the Republic, probably because the
state outline was a more recognizable symbol in the 1930s. Typical of the genre of popular culture souvenir maps, the sheet
focuses on small vignettes, historic routes, sites, symbols, and events covering 400 years of Texas history. In addition, portraits of
men who played pivotal roles in Texas, including Stephen F Austin, William B. Travis, and Sam Houston surround the map.
The artwork was the creation of Dallas illustrator Guy F Cahoon, who has blended the sometimes-whimsical representations of
history into cartographic information. Most importantly, the map reflects Texas' pride in her history and was a worthy publication
for the Daughters of the Republic.
