Partnership: Texas Christian University
We are still in conversation with Dr. Mary
Volcansek, Dean of AddRan College of
Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr.
Gene Smith, Director of Center For Texas
Studies, at Texas Christian University, to
forge a greater togetherness. The goal of
these talks is to further our common just
cause of preserving, telling, and carrying the
story of Texas and the Great Southwest, and
its impact on today, to a variety of audiences.
Upcoming Events - 2005
Program plans are being formulated for the
formal acceptance in 2005 of the Al Lowman
collection of J. Frank Dobie material at the
Southwest Writers Collection at Texas State
University-San Marcos.
November 2005 will be the big fund-raising
auction in Houston for the Texas State
Historical Association. J.P. Bryan is heading
this up. It will be an auction of art, artifacts
and books to raise money for the TSHA's
endowment fund. My collection of Texas
illustrators will go on the block at that time.

Our Newsletter
Many of you will be receiving this newsletter
as a result of TSCA affiliation with the Texas
Historical Foundation (THF) and their
wonderful publication. For some readers of
Heritage, this will be your first introduction to
TSCA, and we are a group of people who are
both private collectors, patrons, and
associates of institutions dedicated to the
preservation of the heritage and history of
Texas and the Great Southwest. As Al
Lowman has taught me, "We preserve the
past to serve as a landmark for the
future."
Spreading Your Message
TSCA, like civilization, should not be created
in a vague and general fashion; but created
bit-by-bit and drop-by-drop over time. With
that in mind if you have items of interest to
share with TSCA members, then contact
Charlie Blanton, at chasb()intur.net; mailing
address is P.O. Box 1082, Dallas, Texas
75221; phone (214) 503 - 7735.We want to hear from you. Together we will
collect and preserve these landmarks for the
future generations. You will find a
membership application online at
www.texascollectors.org. The site is still in
development, but it holds great promise for
TSCA.
Letter from Our Members
I would like to share with your readers a
thought that has been "fermenting" for a
number of years. I'll call it "repatriation", and
it should apply to both the collectors and the
museums. . . If collectors and museums
could work together to only collect those
things associated with the storyline, a lot of
artifacts could be more rationally transferred
... have greatest impact. ... Museums often
collect anything :old:. . . The result is that
museums have artifacts that they will never
display; in fact, never did intend to, but have
shelved simply so they can have a count and
amount. ... If there were a national (or even
a state) clearinghouse where donors,
museums and the public could learn the
"best" place there might be to house their
collections, we'd all be the better for it.
I think this a worthy topic for discussion
amongst the members ... Meanwhile, our
museum is planning an exhibit next April in
association with the state designated
Confederate history month and we would
appreciate hearing from those members with
objects (civil or military) that your collectors
might entertain loaning to us.
