THF Member Gifts Are Helping Save This Historic Treasure
To date, Texas Historical
Foundation directors and members
have donated more than $12,000 to
support the preservation of the
Millard's Crossing Historic Village in
Nacogdoches. The money will be
turned over to Millard's Crossing in
June.
Millard's Crossing Historic
Village, established by the late Lera
Thomas in Nacogdoches, is an
aging historic village complex that
is in need of preservation. The historic
documents, antique structures, artifacts, and furniture
there help tell the story of the pioneer settlement of Texasin
the place that is recognized as "the oldest town in the
state."
Since the Foundation mail fundraising appeal was sent out on
Texas Independence Day, March 2, the Nacogdoches preservationists
have accomplished several major goals in their plan to
save the Village and its historic inventory:
*. First, and most importantly, more than $100,000 has been
raised locally, thereby ensuring the transfer of the property from
the two current owners to a single, locally owned 501(c)(3) corporation.
Raising that amount was the primary condition for
property donation. Letters of intent and acceptance were
exchanged, and the property deed was transferred on June 1,
2008.
*. An inventory of the entire Millard's Crossing Historic
Village collection is underway, satisfying yet another condition
for transfer of the property.
*. A "Grand Evening at the Crossing" gala was held on May 31
at the historic site to celebrate the Village's transfer of ownership
to the people of Nacogdoches and to honor large campaign
donors.
*- The Village has added new board members with expertise in
investments, business, marketing, advertising, and fundraising to
help carry out key initiatives that will ensure a successful restoration
and advocacy campaign.
Kelly Rushing, of Houston, THF president, noted that the
Foundation has been impressed with what's been accomplishedby Nacogdoches preservationists.
"The Foundation always looks for
broad local support with any project
that we get behind and that is certainly
evident in Nacogdoches. I am
pleased that through our organization's
fundraising appeal, Texans
from across the state have stepped
forward to help save Millard's
Crossing Historic Village." He continued, "With this contribution from THF, we've helped put a
Texas face on this Nacogdoches project."
Anyone who is interested in contributing to this fundraising
campaign can contact THF's Austin office at 512-453-2154.
Every dollar that is donated to support this project, through THF,
will be passed along to Millard's Crossing Historic Village, Inc.
so that the money can be used to save this important piece of our
Texas past.
