Mr. and Mrs. .lop Lucas entertained
their friends Tuesday evening at a house
Warming. Pink carnations and roses
comprised the adornment In the parlor,
white carnations and delicate greenery
In the dining room, while In the reception
hall American Beauty roses were the
deroratlon*. The bower for the punch
bowl was arranged in the reception hall
Mrs. Thomas Heargent presided there.
The galleries were Inclosed in canvas, en-
tirely covered v. ith smllax. and cosy cor-
ners were arranged, one on each side, for
the band and for a smoker. The floor
of the galleries xvas waxed, and a largo
number of the guests enjoyed dancing.
Mrs. I,uca*, Mrs. Clpora Brown, Mrs.
Freda Crager and Mrs. II. J. Lutcher
were in the receiving line. Misses Helen
Achenhach and Sadie Malone and Mrs.
J. T. Adams rendered delightful solos.
A two-course luncheon was served.
Miss Helen Achenhach complimented
Iter guests, Miss Mabel Chamber* of
Houston mid Miss Fay Ellsworth of Cal-
ifornia, with a dance Friday evening. A
large number of the young folks attend-
ed. Dainty refreshments were served.
The Five Hundred dub. recently reor-
tanlxeil, met last Tuesday with Miss
rsrgnret Davidson. All of the old mem-
bers and also Mrs. Thomas Heargent and
Mrs. Frank Brown, were present. Miss
Belle Peveto held the highest score. A
luncheon of creamed oysters, olives.
Wafers end ten was served. Miss Helen
Acherihacli will entertain the club next
Tuesday.
Mrs. George A. Foreman, .lr.. has been

The bride, a daughter of Mrs. .T. C.
Jones, is admired and loved by all for
her many sweet and gracious ways. The
guoom is of the firm of B. B. Hoskins
& Sons. They left for St. Louis and
New York for a several weeks' stay, aft-
er which they will return to this city to
make their home.
Miss Armour Harwood was at home to
the T. A. S. club Wednesday afternoon.
After the business routine the afternoon
was turned over to Miss Harwood. The
hostess then handed each guest dainty
pamphlets, on which was written "A
Literary Romance." Spaces were left
which were to be filled in by the names
of books. Miss "Birdie Wright of Mar-
lin was the fortunate winner of tiie
piize, a book. Refreshments, consisting
of chicken salad, olives, pickles, wafers,
chocolate and cake, were served the
guests. Those present besides the mem-
bers were Mrs. Jones Matthews, Mrs.
Miller Harwood, Miss Mattie Harwood,
Miss Eloise DeWitt, Mrs. Warren Taylor
and Miss Birdie Weight.

afternoon at the Giddings Memorial

Friday evening It gave a reception at
the church in honor of Rev. C. J. Oxley
of the Sunday School association of Texas.
A large number attended, glad of the op-
portunity to meet this talented man. At
the close of the evening refreshments of
chocolate and cake were served.

Miller, Misses Ella. Signora and Francis

evening. At midnight light refreshments

The Aid and Missionary society of the
First Baptist church met Tuesday after-
noon with Mrs. F. W. Wood. The sub-
ject was "Prayer for Our Church," with
Mrs. J W. Dallas as leader. Those pres-

Tiie Fortnightly club held its regular
meeting at its club rooms Thursday after-
noon. The program postponed from De-
cember 23 was given, with Mrs. John M.
Key as leader, the quotations for the day
being, "The mistletoe hung in the castle
hail, the holly branch shone on the old
oak wall." Montesquien and Voltaire
were discussed. Mrs. F. W. Schurenberg
read a paper on "Social Instinct," Mrs.
R. R. Roberts read "From Revolution to
Restoration" and Mrs. J. J. March and
Miss Bertha Schurenberg sang "Oh, Di-
vine Redeemer." Then the regular pro-
gram for the day was taken up, Mrs.
Peyton Trving, Jr., being leader. The
quotation was from the great Napoleon,
"It is necessary to wish to live to know
how to die." The urogram was as fol-

Mrs. Jack Reagin returned home Mon-
day after spending the holidays with
home folks in Gonzales.
Miss Lightfoot and Miss Miller, from
Comanche, are visiting their cousin, Mrs.
Kiser. They will return home next Mon-
day.
Mrs. E. L. Blackmon has returned
home after a pleasant visit with her sis-
ter. Mrs. G. R. Acord of Houston.
Mrs. L. T. King, who has been a guest
at the Wilburn home for the last month,
returned to her home in Beaumont the
latter part of the week.
Miss Annie Pelt of Sour Lake, who
has been visiting at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Sid Ratcliff, returned home Thurs-

Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Bain left Monday
for Bay City to visit their married daugh-
ter living at that place.

Wednesday night with a nice attendance.
Fifty-two applications were read and
officers elected. There was a public in-
stallation Saturday night and dance aft-
erward.
Miss Dell Glenn of Bellville, who has
been the guest of her sister. Mrs. Cherry,

Mrs. Ed Rice and children, who have
been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. .T.

time for the benefit of Buckner's Orphans

is to be held January 20 at the home of
Mrs. Donald McCullough.

The Outlook club held Its regular meet-
ing Thursday afternoon in the Sunday
school room of the Methodist church.
Miss Vera Reeves and Miss Kate Klzee
of Marlin are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Brax-
ton Eastham. The young ladles are re-
membered as among the attractive girls
who attended the normal last term.
Mrs. M. E. Foster has established a
pretty custom of entertaining an attrac-
tive and congenial coterie of home girls
some afternoon during the holidays in
honor of her son, Arthur Booster. Mrs.
Foster invests these unique little parties
with originality and sparkle, and the
girls who compose the bright bunch look
forward with pleasant anticipations to
this annual affair. This year the honoree
being out of town during most of holiday
week, the entertainment did not take
place until Tuesday afternoon. The
guests were Misses Mamie Rather, Mae
S. Wynne, Lillian Bush, Carrie Smith,
Sara Pace, Moselle Parish, Mary Mark-
ham and Roblie Oliphint and they wore
their stunningest frocks and feathers.
The honoree was the only man present
and assisted his mother most gallantly in
making the afternoon notably Joyous.
During refreshments the girls all gath-
ered about a huge bowl of sangiree, made
after the famous Louisiana formula of
the hostess, and lifted their cups to
"many happy returns of the party." Mrs.
Foster has given a series of small "pretty,
girl" affairs this winter and thereby
placed these young folks deeply in her
debt.
Miss Linda Parker returned to her
home in Trinity Saturday. While in town
she visited Miss Annie Ashley.
A very pleasant event of the week was
Wednesday evening's dance at Randolph's
in honor of Miss Vera Reeves of Mar-
lin and Miss Linda Parker of Trinity.
The music of a five-piece orchestra sta-
tioned in the balcony, a polished floor and
the best of partners in the dance made
the evening one of rare beauty and
charm.
J. B. Gordon chapter. United Daugh-
tres of the Confederacy, celebrated the
Lee and Jackson anniversary at the regu-
lar monthly session last Wednesday aft-
ernoon. The home of Hon. and Mrs. A.
T. McKinney was the scene and setting
of this important occasion, for it is one
of the most notable dates on our Unit-
ed Daughters of the Confederacy calen-
dar. No more appropriate atmosphere
could have been chosen, for the name of
McKinney is historic and our hostess was
Miss Mary Hill before her marriage.
After business was disposed of an In-
teresting program was enjoyed. Miss
Bertha Kirpley, Mr. E. T. Goree and
Miss Mae Wrynne gave the literary num-
bers and Mrs. Stephen Tredennick the
musical ones. The social hour, when Miss
Cornelia McKinney and Miss Dorothy
Randolph assisted Mrs. McKinney, and a
dainty luncheon was served, was a
charming finale to a very delightful aft-
ernoon.

The last meeting of the literary club
was held at the residence of Mrs. T. 1..
Smith. Mrs. Smith's cousin, Mrs. W. J.
Matthews, was the hostess. Mrs. Eman-
uel Roos. the president of the society, re-
ported, despite the inclement weather,
eighteen members were present. All on
fne program came with the papers and
tne audience learned considerable about
Germany. However, the luncheon was
thoroughly an American affair, which
consisted of sliced turkey, cranberry
sauce, asparagus, sandwiches and hot
coffee. Those from Matthews were: Mrs.
Haynie Matthew's, Mrs. W. J. Matthews
and Miss Brieger.
BAY CITY.
Mrs. C. L. St. Aubin entertained the
Forty-two club Tuesday afternoon In
honor of her guests. Miss Steele of Hous-
ton and Misses Hinkle of Hinkles Ferry.
The reception rooms of Mrs. Aubin's
lovely home were tastily decorated with
cut flowers and ferns. The score cards
were dainty band-painted butterflies. Six
tables were arranged for the guests. Tua
club prize, a dainty hand-painted bonbon
dish, was won by Mr*. Pitluk; the guest
prize, an elegant silver mounted hat
brush, in a cut between Miss Vera Bates
and Mrs. Reynolds, was won 'by Miss
Bates, while the booby prize fell to Mrs.
H. B. Eidman. At the conclusion of the
games Mrs. Aubin, assisted by her charm-
ing guests, Miss Steele and Misses Hinkle
served an oyster courso consisting of
oyster cocktail, celery salad, olives,
crackers, wafers and chocolate with whip-
ped cream. Mrs. Aubin's guests on this
occasion, besides the club members, in-

Mrs. George Farmer of Markham royal-
ly entertained the Priscilla club 'Wednes-
day afternoon, the ladies who are mem-
bers from Bay City making the trip in
automobiles. Mrs. Fanner's elegant home,
enhanced with Southern smilax and pot
(plants, made a pretty setting for the
bright gowns of the ladies. Three inter-
esting contests were enjoyed by the
ladies, the prizes being won by Mrs.
JDantzler and Mrs. Walter McGill. After
the contests Mrs. Farmer, in her own
hospitable manner, served a delicious
three-course luncheon, the menu consist-
ing of creamed oysters on toast, turkey
with dressing and cranberry sauce, chick-
en salad, stalk celery, olives, wafers and
coffee. Several guests from among tiie
Markham ladies were present. The ladies
going over from Bay City to enjoy this

Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Moore entertained
Wednesday evening in honor of their
daughter, "Miss Adele, who is one of the
season's most charming debutantes, and

Wa elder. Cut flowers and ferns com-
bined to make a bower of beauty of the
reception rooms of this lovely home. Six
tables were arranged with "hearts" for
the game. The score cards were in heart
shape and the decorations of the evening
were carried out in this design. The gen-
tlemen's prize, a heart-shaped stick pin,
was won by R. R. Lewis, while the ladies'
prize, a cut glass heart-shaped dish, was
won by Miss Porter. The punch table,
in a dainty bower of ferns and heart
decorations, was presided over by Miss
Louis Moore. After the games refresh-
ments of heart-shaped ice cream, heart-
shaped cakes and hot coffee were served.

Twenty-one people gathered at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Berg Wed-
nesday evening at 7:30 o'clock and then
with laden baskets made their way to
the residence of Mrs. E. C. Baker, Mr.
Baker being in the lead, and as silently
they entered the yard, crept up to the
porch a*d then made their presence
known by storming the door. Their "in-
vasion" was a complete surprise to the
hostess, as was intended, it being her
birthday, and she gave the visitors a
cordial welcome, immediately entering
into the spirit of fun reveaicd by the
others, a merry evening was spent in
games and music, until the hour of 10.
when the hostess passed fudge and
served cake and hot chocolate furnished

hostess, who smilingly responded in her

brary Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Robert
Houston, in the absence of the president,

began with the recital of the early con-
ditions in Gaul, conquest by Julius
Ceasar and the introduction of Chris-
tianity leading up through the first of
the Merovingian kings to Charlemagne,
which was taken up by Miss Kate Ruge-
ly. Mrs. E. B. Darling told of the Cape-
tian line of kings and the chief events,
feudalism, chivalry and the crusades.
Mrs. Vance Duncan discussed the strug-
gle between France and England, clos-
ing with the story of Joan of Arc. The
Valois branch and women in French his-
tory had been assigned Mrs. Armstrong
and was discussed by the entire club.
Henry Navarre was Mrs. J. R. Cloud's
topic., while "The Splendors of Louis XIV
Reign" "were covered by Mrs. McCamley.
Mrs. Robert Huston gave a graphic de-
scription of Louis XV and XVI. "Bona-
parte and the French Republic" were
given by Mrs. Nell Matthews, Mrs. J. M.
Andrews read a sketch frorn the De-
lineator "French Court Today."
The Baotist Ladies' Aid society will
hold a social meeting next Tuesday aft-
