our seven trips
Although
through CnrlHbnd Cnvcnis
cause us to feci thnt wo should
apply for a position as guide
never once hnvo wo failed to
enjoy accompanying the Bcnlor
clnss of the local high school n3
the youngsters view one of the
scenic wonders of the world
each spring Flity one seniors
made the trip this year in a six
wheel truck owned and driven
by A C George The group
spent several happy hours swimming
horse back riding boating
and enjoying each other in the
atmosphere of Black River Village
which is located in a secluded
spot between Carlsbad
and the caverns For several it
was their first venture outsldo a
SO mile radius of Swisher county
Much credit for the success of
the trip goes to Mrs Ross Crocker
and Mrs Kenneth Ramsey
chaperons
With all due credit to claries
of other years we must admit
thnt this class was the most
orderly and cooperative of any
weve sponsored The operators
of the camp at which we stayed
told us we had the best class of
any they had entertained The
first night all was quiet by 10
oclock and even the sponsor
was asleep by midnight Saturday
no thanks to Greedy Furlow
and Pat Ramsey Of course such
a trip never falls to afford many
humorous situations For instance
after cautioning Elwood not
to spend all his money Mrs
iRamsey found that she had
spent all of her own Elmer
Schuster got a genuine soaking
when his horse sat down In the
middle of a stream The odor of
cigar smoke Sunday morning
brought the minds of Joe and
Lynn Cowan back home because
they always associate cigar smoke
with Sunday when Uiclr dad is
around the house Clyde Cox
considered himself a crack bowler
ii Ml someone told him thnt
the i r > a wiiint to roll the ball
clown o chute in which the balls
are returned Juno Bell was on
her flood behavior due to the
fact that most of her actions
were preserved for posterity and
her parents by a good Boll j
Howell movie camera in kodach
romc too
Perhaps the seniors deserve
their greatest commendation for
their disinterest in the many
bars and honkytonks with which
Carlsbad is Infested Only once
did the group express a desiro
to go to town and we didnt
observe a single instnnco of alcoholic
brtith on that occasion
Wo dont give all the credit
for this trend to the indniduals
invoved Rather wo believe it
is the result of placing more responsibility
upon the individual
teaching him how to conduct himself
in society while he is yet in
school One philosophy of education
creates an atmosphere
where a student has no need for
a mind with which to think He is
handed a list of several hundred
rules and his only responsibility
is to be a Charlie McCarty In
the hands of an Edgar Bcrgin
Consequently when he finds himself
in a situation out from under
these rules his reaction is
likely to reflect an inability to
cope with It What were trying
to say is this Marching kids In
and out of a school auditorium
isnt going to teach them how
to enter or leave a church or
theatre >
you hear any hail a week
Did
ago Wednesday night during
the rain We didnt either
but it is reported that 327 English
sparrows were found dead
the noxt morning around the
courthouse by Mr Holcomb
we leave the subject
Before
of Carlsbad pet sons who
visited the caverns prior to the
transfer of Supt Boles will be
disappointed to learn that the
impressive service at the Rock
of Ages ha been discontinued
No longer does the group enjoy
the moment of darkness at this
spot and listen to the beautiful
strains of the hymn This is duo
to the fact that several trips are
in progress at the same time
Persons who have never made
the trip because they didnt feel
equal to tho physical strain will
bo glad to know that a special
tour has been arranged whorcby
one takes the elevator down to
the Big Room makes a trip
around tho room wichh takes
about an hour and includes the
most beautiful part of the cavern
Since this trip is all on the
samo level well bet oven Wade
Stephenson or Gene Barks could
mako It
