WEEKLY SERMON
By Thomas Hastwcll
I remember as a boy that
near the town in which I lived
there was a small stream which
might have been called a brook
or a creek It flowed through n
fnrmlng section most of which
was devoted to pastures As a
result the water was clear and
the stream unsullied by sediment
As it wound its way between the
hills over roads and sand it
furnished n Bourco of water for
stock pastured along Its course
and the young people of the Village
used to go swimming in
its crystal clear pools One day
an Industry located in the com
munity and discharged its refuse
and sewage into the little stream
From that timo on It no longer
furnished pure elenr water from
which the cattle pastured along
its course could satisfy their
thirst and It was abandoned by
the children of the community
who no longer waded or swam in
its pools How like a human life
Is a stream of water As long
as it lives in clean surroundings
and no pollution finds its way
into it it is clean and wholesome
If sin and wrong and unclean
habits arc permitted to
pollute it those who love the
clean things turn from it as did
the cattle and the boys and girls
in the little stream near my hometown
A human life cannot receive
into Itself pollution and
still remain clean
Minute editorials
Wo note a warning in our
daily by a columnist that girls
should bcwaic of the so called
wolves We might add that we
have seen many a bold bad wolf
converted into a tame old housedog
by a timid slip ot a girl
There will always be gossipors
as long as there are those who
listen with twitching cars to the
tales of the gossipers
The small struggling industries
and business of this country
aie going o be handed n led hot
one wnun Congress passes the
new WageHour law The provisions
of the new law aie ridiculous
when it comes to small industry
and smoll business but
no one is stirring himself to do
anything about it Few of those
who will be affected have taken
ho tioublc to protest to their
Representatives in Congress Thoy
appear to think that it wont
affect them only the man across 1
the street They are nil going
to got a Mid surprise when the
law is passed providing a mini
mum wage of 75 cents an hour
and 112 an hour for ovcitime
The new law will be broadened
until few escape Small business
and small industry and small
employers are all asleep at the
switch They do not have the
advantage of volume in business
mass production and assembly
line methods They cannot pav
the proposed wago and survive
because they cannot produce on
their limited scale as cheaply or
as economically ns the large
operator with volume sales and
mass production can
The news reports state that
some 500 British girls have been
deserted and are being sued for
divorce by their G I husbands
The girls left in England cannot
appear in court and no doubt
many of them will be divorced
without ever having a chance to
present their side of the case or
even to be present at the trial
The sympathy of most people
concerned with fair play IS with
the young wives many of whom
have children by their G I
husbands It just doesnt appeal

Our dally contained yesterday
the account of a sex crime committed
by a sex pervert who had
been paroled from a prison sentence
being served for a similar

of on official who would
