China-Inspired art exhibit by Larry Thompson
By lee Ramse
Opinion Editor
"Just Moments:
images and words inspired
by China," is a series of
photographs by artist Larry
Thompson, associate pro-
fessor and chair of art at
Samford University, juxta-
posed with lines of poetry by
Johnny Wink, professor of
English and resident poet at
Ouachita Baptist University
in Arkansas.
The poetry follows the
subject matter of the pho-
tographs and gives a point
of reference to the viewer.
Each picture represents a
dichotomy of style, visual
art mixed with literature.
These photographs taken
abroad seem to represent
"old China" in contrast to
the new, while the poetry
blends with it to create a
wistful vision of another
culture.
"China is currently
undergoing an incredible
transformation in its cul-
ture. Often this is a good
thing, but there are some
things that are being torn
down that can never be
replaced," says Thompson
in his artist's statements
concerning the exhibit.
Larry Thompson will
be appearing on the Hardin-
Simmons University cam-
pus during the reception for
his exhibit in HSU's Frost
Center for the Visual Arts.
The reception will be held
from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 18th
The art faculty will be in
attendance, and the recep-
tion is open to all students
with a valid student ID and
will include refreshments.
Thompson will pres-
ent some of his other works
via PowerPoint presenta-
tion in room 103 in the Frost
Center for the Visual Arts.
The Larry Thompson
exhibit will continue until
Friday, September 19th.
The Frost Center for the
Visual Arts is open Monday
through Friday 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. and the exhibit
should be available for view-
ing during those times.
Students are encour-
aged to attend both the
exhibit and the reception.
Chapel credit will be issued
for attendance, but the fac-
ulty requires students to
stay for at least an hour to
receive credit.

Inside the Promethean world: HSU to embrace
new technology
By Elyse Hahne
Managing Editor
There will be some new technology hitting the science buildings this fall. It is called a Promethean board and will be installed in class-
rooms soon. On September 5th, 2008, Dr. Richard Garner led an informal session of Promethean board training for staff.
What is a Promethean board you may ask? It is like a smart board that allows presentations and other computer-generated programs to be
presented in a classroom setting. In addition to presentations, it is interactive and students can literally point and click on correct answers.
Professors will be able to incorporate this device in their classrooms and also will be able to teach students how to perform with the boards
as well. This will also allow presentations to be visually drawn on and allow students to explore technology in a hands-on environment.
According to Mrs. Wendi Moran, HSU Biology lab coordinator and adjunct instructor, the "Promethean board will allow students to pres-
ent a hands-on presentation."
So if you have a chance to experiment with the Promethean board in the math and science building, jump at it. Promethean boards
will soon begin to pop up in the building. Not only can data be presented in the classroom, students minds' will be challenged as well with
this great board.
