ARE often confronted with the question Who pays for adverWE
tising and everyone seems to think that ho or she Is the one who
indirectly pays for tho service of this great servant advertising
The follwoing artlclo was written by John H Casey professor of
journalism and advertising In the University of Oklahoma nnd is on the
way to becoming n newspaper classic
What Is advertising Ono form of salesmanship
Purpose To sell
Who pays for It John and Mary Public say they do Indirectly
Soloman Issac Business Man says he knows too well that ho pays
for advertising
Rut I say the customer does not pay an advertising bill If the ad
vcrtlslng is effective efficiently done run In the light medium at the
right time and Is In every other respect right
For when greater demand for goods is created by advertising more
goods can be manufactured in larger quantities and shelves restocked
nt less cost per unit of production per Item of merchandise in consequence
of that created demand etlther at less cost or with more quality
at tho same cost which nmuont to the same thing
There you have the theory of mass production and quantity buying
packed together In a pecan shell
Yes the merchant Is sure he pays the advertising cost But 1 say
io does not for the larger the volume of business the retailer can do
tho less his percentage of overhead of which advertising is but one of
Iho many items No more light no more heat no more of several other
overhead items required for 110000 turnover than for 100000
Well If the customer doesnt pay and the merchant doesnt pay
for advertising then who does pay for it
Why bless your soul The truth of the matter is that effective
advertising is selfsupporting selfliquidating Nobody pays for good
advertising unless if we must find somebody to pay for it I guess It
Comes pretty near being the nonadvertising merchant who pays
WHO PAYS FOR ADVERTISING
ad pays whose overhead goes up as his sales volumo goes down he
a auf ho nonadvertising customer who always buys blind falls to read
tho ads and in consequence gets stuck with inferior nonadvertised
goods at higher prices than he need pay
And there you have the answer to the old old question Who pays
for effective advertising in the final analysis Not tho buyer of advertised
goods not the merchant who sells the goods and uses the advertising
space but the nonadvertiser who falls to get the business and
the nonadreadlng public
The statements In these last two paragraphs it seems to us not
only supplement but add emphasis to the truths which the releases pro
Tided hy consumers information are going across to tho buying public

WHY CHILDREN HAVE TUBERCULOSIS
is not inherited but Is caused by a germ Just like
TUBERCULOSIS
typhoid fever and and diphtheria Any child may be Infected by tuberculosis
grems and ANY child may develop active tuberculosis if It
is heavily Infected The reason children from tuberculosis families develop
tuberculosis more often than do those from nontuberculosis families
Is because they are much more frequently exposed to the germs
irom their closest associates parents or other relatives There Is no
positive proof they are any more susceptible to tuberculosis than the
average child
At present It Is discovered that most tuberculous adults received
their infections In childhood which makes the matter of the prevention
of childhood infection of even greater greater concern
Tuberculosis germs may be transmitted directly from one person to
another by careless coughing spitting or sneezing Germs also may be
acquired by handling articles grobsly contaminated by careless coughing
sneezing or spitting Whle most adults are relatively immune to
such sources of infection children who sire In repeated contact with
persons 111 from tuberculosis almost Invariably contract a massive and
therefore a potentially dangerous infection There is absolutely no way
of determining beforehand which child will escape with a cmoparatlve
ly harmless Infection and which is destined eventually to become a

cleaned rooms formerly occupied by tuberculosis patients are very likely
to become Infected While readily destroyed by exposure to direct
vunligbt tuberculosis germs have been known to remain alive for
months both In and outdoors In places InacceEslble to direct sunlight
Children even In adolescence should be kept away from all cough
crs and more especially chronic coughers Individuals Including elder
ly persons are very prone to attribute a chronic lack of good health to
weak lungs bronchial trouble lasting colds pleurisy poor
recovery from Influenza etc Too often in reality they are suffering
trom tuberculosis but do not suspect the true nature of their condition
and consquently take no precaution against spreading the Infection to
others Unsuspected cases of tuberculosis among parents grandparents
servants school teachers and others undoubtedly aro as much responsible
for tho trammission of tuberculosis germs to children as are all
the known cases combined
Children may contract tuberculosis by eating infected foodstuffs especially
raw milk from tuberculous cows In larger communities tuberculosis
from this source has dcereased remarkably duo to the fact most

Whoever receives it is called the

to be lucky
Young men go in groups to the

At midnight on New Years Eve
