HERALD ADV BRINGS
BIG RETURNS
According to one vt our
advertisers ono who keeps
his message before the
readers every week one little
advertisement brought
him 2100 worth of business i
In three days on one article
and a small one at that Direct
results on advertising
are sometimes hard to arrive
it since readers are prone
to keep the fact that thoy
paw the article advertised
to themselves If our readers
would tell their merchant
that they saw their ad in tho
paper it would make the
merchant feol better and the
publisher would also appreciate
it If Wrigley can make
millions on a five cent nrtl
cle by spending millions in
advertising so can local merchants
increase their business
many times over the
po3t of the above advs by inserting
nds regularly in the
home paper
Tells How To Raise
Calves At Low Cost
Calves that are allowed to run
with their mothers on good pasture
will probably do well without
a gralu supplement for the
first four or five weeks
Young calves however that
are kept from their dams with
the exception of a few minutes
twice a day when they are permitted
to take milk make betlor
growth on feeds They should be
taught to oat a little grain mix
ture and some legume hay of
good quality If an older calf
that has learned to eat grain is
plnced with thu young one it
will learn to eat the grain a little
tfore1 readily
At the New Jersey Experiment
Station 28 was the average cost
of raising calveH to tho age of C
months without milk or milk substitutes
after they were one month
old These calves were taken from
their mothers when from 30 to
48 hours nnd fed wholemilk three
times a day until one month old
Whtrn ono week old the grain rn
ration whs placed before thorn
a little was smeared on their
noses to get them accustomed
to it
This ration was composed of
100 pounds of yellow corn meal
150 pounds ground oats 50
pounds each of linseed meal
wheat bran and soluble blood
flour and 112 pounds of minerals
consisting of equal parts of limestone
steamed bone meal and
salt
Fjoiii the time tho calf is three
weeks of age until one month old
the amount of milk fed should
be gradually reduced either In
the amount of liquid or by substituting
water for the milk
When the calf is one month old
It should be getting nothing but
good alfalfa hay tho dry grain
mixture nnd water At this timo
It should bo consuming from one
to two pounds of tho grain mixture
dally arid gaining an average
of one pound a day even
thought It may look a little thin
for a few weeks after tho milk
ceding Is stopped
