Editorial Speaking of tho now

Interest in raising chick
ons in Milam County ono of our
wellknown farmers said tho other
day It can not last eggs nnd
chickens will soon bo so cheap
that it will not pay to raise them
Our friend need not bo alarmed
Camerons hatchery hns a capacity
of less than 25000 eggs Next
year it will probably bo 40000
but what is that comparqd with a
big poultry center whero prices
are heifer than they are in
Cameron
A recent news item says On
March 27th Leo A Burke completed
at Petaluma California the
largest chick hatchery in tho
world with a capacity of 1800000
eggs every threo weeks This 13
only ono of tho lato developments

nine smaller plants in tho vicinity
Tho output of chicks is in addition
or course to tho enormous
quantity of eggs produced in
petaluma and vicinity It is estimated
that within ten miles of

prj < 0 doubt has met quite
a i < v of those lellows that when
a i iw iliiug is presented aro always
ready to smother tho tiny
spark of encouragement or on
thusiim by prompty resorting to
the cold brick application
In every community wo have
calamity howlois that can not
ucu anything worth whilo in any
net enterprise
Lggs are now 1G cents per dozen
just as cheap as they have
beca 111 many years Some farm
era ind poultry raisers aro ready
to ilnow up the sponge and hol
lei tjuus
iui us look at this question
from several viewpoints In the
Iliac placo wo can mako money
a little and sell oggs in March
Aiail and May for 15 cents per
doen In these months a flock
of ell bred chickens whon property
led will pioduce ogg at 10c
per dozen and less llowovor
oggs aie not always 15c per dozen
I hoy have been 40c and more
for many months Why blame the
low iioo of eggd why not chock
up oil yourself and see why your
ohUveiis aro not laying whon
ogu aro 40c por dozen We have
pio on wo can mako money in
tho Spring months by selling eggs
at lf > c per dozen and buy every
particle of feet our chickens oat
However lot us view tho darkest
side of the outlook and that is
15 cents por dozen for markot
eggs in the Spring months A
flock of 2000 hens with just
av < ago feeding caie and blood
ing behind thorn will produco at
least 1400 oggs por day In tho
months mentioned above during
low prices of eggs This flock
would eat not moro than 385 lbs
of feed a day mash and grain
and nt an avorago rotall prlco of
3c por pound the feed cost would
bo 1155 por day Tho 1400
eggs at 16c per dozon would equal
an incomo of 1755 por day or
a profit over feed cost of G00 por
day on a flock of 2000 layers To
bo suro this is low but remember
wo have taken tho lowest
prlco of eggs Tho farmer that
grows part of his feed at least
can do much better This same
flock when oggs nro 48c per
dozon if properly mannged will
lay an average of at loaBt 900
eggs por day on tho aamo amount
of feed Tho 000 ogga would be
worth 3000 less tho food cost
of 1155 por day loavlng a profit
of 1445 por day for labor and
other items of oxpouso or at least
a not profit of 1000 por day
over all exponso or nt least a not
profit of 1000 per day over all
expenses on a flock of 2000 laying
hens whon oggs aro 48c por doa
on Eggs bring 48c per doaen or
more for as long a period each
yoar as they bring IS csnta per
dozon
Tho past year eggs hnvo averaged
a llttlo better than 30c per
dozen Tho average cost of producing
a dozen eggs counting feed
only is loss than 15 cents per dozenWo arc ready to admit that egg
farming is not a get rich quick
sHiemo Wo sincerely believe
however that 200 good layers on
a farm will rotuiti a not profit

Petaluma California buys a
great deal of their grains from
tho Panhandle of Texas They
then ship the eggs in carload lots
right past our front door to Now
York City Wo aro a 1000 miles
nearer the main markets We
produce enough feed to feed sev
ei al million layers Our climate
matches that of California from
the standpoint of poultry keeping
In spite of these facts some poo
plo say wo are too far away from
a markot
I am not writing this trying to
justify our present low price of
eggs In a future article I am
going to prove that low prices
of eggs in Texas to a large degree
aro duo to tho fact that
our people still believe in quantity
rather than quality We actually
do not appreciate tho importance
of producing quality oggs
With too many an egg is an egg
