SANATORIUM AT CARLSBAD
Kas Bureau of Ccrrcspondonco and InformationPurpose
For Uio benefit of those who havo
tuberculosis and for agencies interested
in the stamping out of the disease tho
State Tuberculosis Sanatorium located
at Carlsbad Tom Green County Texas
maintains a Bureau of Correspondenco
and Information for tho dissemination
of knowledge ou the prevention and
further spread of tuberculosis Tho control
of tuberculosis and if possible its
elimination is now considered to be of
prime necessity to tho successful prosecution
of tho War Tho matter is
primarily one of education and recognizing
thi the Thirty Fifth Legisla
ture made an appropriation of 2000000
to bo used by tho Sanatorium For
locturing in colleges schools and public
gatherings publishing pamphlets books
and literature to bo circulated including
general work to educate the public and
prcnt as much as posible the spread
of tuberculosis
Service to the Tuberculous
The Bureau obtains unities of the
tuberculous from physicians antituber
culosis societies ex patients of tho Sana
torium and others To the tuberculous
and others interested are mailed
pamphlets bearing on the treatment and
pretention of tuberculosis This matter
is not uninteresting rending and it
would be a blessing to the State if ovcry
ehool teaehar every minister every
publie speaker and the head of every
family in the SUto would rend it A
sptfeial effort has been made to get in
contact with Texas soldiers discharged
from army camps on account of tuber
culosis These are supplied with literature
and application blanks so that
they may apply for entrance to the
Sanatorium if they so desire
Service to the Physician
A majority of the physicians line
expressed a desire to be furnished with
reprints of articles by specialists on the
early discovery of tuberculosis readily
admitting that they are deficient as to
the methods of making earlv diagnosis
Once cach month a carefully selected
nrticle on methods and treatment is
mailed out to all Jho physicians of tho
State and it is believed this service is
appreciated Tuberculosis is one of
the most curable of diseases provided
treatment is begun in tune If this
was not true half of tho population or
more would die from it because post
mortems tend to show that practically
everyone has at one tune or nnother
an infection of tuberculosis
Importance of Instructing Children
It has been snitl that if all children
could be protected from infection tuber
culosls would bo stamped out in a decade
This somewhat exaggerates tho
truth but it is now believed by compo
tent authorities that tuberculosis is
rarely if ever contracted in adult llfo
Wo are not profiteering CompareTho infection takes placo in childhood
lour prices with the other fellows Meland later usually in young manhood

comes It follows tlnuii If children
could bo taught to avoid infection or
if their mothers and tcnehors could bo
tnuglit to protect them from infection
n great deal would havo been dono toward
doing awaj with tho diseaso
Fortunately it is not n dlllliiiU matter
ti > protect tho young To do so
reduces only that thoso who havo
iitlo cases of tuberculosis bo required
to avoid infecting others Practically
tho onl way uf spreading infection
is through the sputum therefoe if tho
sputum ofconsumptives was carefully
collected and destroyed ono of tho
main sources would havo been controlled
It is an easy matter for ono to
spit in paper sputum cups mid Inter
burn the cups Spitting nt all is nil
unnecessary and disgusting habit but
for a consumptive to spit around promiscuously
is crimlnnl Thoso consumptives
who fail to protect tho public
in this way should bo placed in
special institutions just as are lunatics
or criminals Other common ways of
infecting others are through kissing
and coughing and sneering without
co cring tho fnce Kissing by consump
tives should bo prohibited and spread
of infection by coughing or sneezing
prevented by covering tho faco with
a paper napkin or muslin cloth this
napkin or cloth later to bo burned
Where children nro exposed to infcC
tion lit tho homo the consumptive
should bo isolated from them as much
as possible Scparnto utensils should
be provided or at any rate alt dishes
used by tho consumptive should bo
boiled after use
No Danger to Others
A careful consumptive is not n danger
to anyone and if this fact could
be borne in mind much mental anguish
much persecution of thoso who can
least stand it would be avoided This
unreasoning fear of tho consumptive is
known as phthisiphobia Quite often it
proves to be the case that the consumptive
who realizes his condition and
takes proper precautions to protect
others is subjected to nnito vnnco or
ostracized whereas a careless con
suinptivo or one ignorant of his condi
Hon without knowledge of protecting
others is permitted to minglo with
well peoplo and pursuo his usual eourso
of life merely because he l never
been labeled
Service of Bureau Open to All Alike
If ns hns been estimated the eco
nomic loss to the State from tuberculo
sis is ninety million dollars per voar
this alono should prove a cogent rea
sou for nctivo stops being taken to
control the diseaso However the mon
etary loss Is tho least consideration in
a proposition of this kind because hu
mnii lives and human happiness enn
not be estimated in dollars and cents
With live thousand denths jier annum
and more fliau fifty thousand lives
blostod and ruined an iden of tho
ravages of tho disonse is given It
was for the purpose of arousing tho
people of the State to action so that
a more active combatting of the disease
might be entered liuto that the
Hurenu was established Thero was
uo thought of supplanting or hindering
well established agencies and the Hu
renus service is open to nil to physicians
nuti tuberculosis societies and
others and particularly to the tuber
culous One of tho main functions of
tho Bureau will be to entourage tho
establishing of county sanatoria and
prcventorin to furnish sputum cups and
supplies to tho tuberculous nt cost nnd
to givo information on the subject of
tuberculosis its prevention njid treat
nient to mione who will receive it To
