"THE BRIDGE TO COLLEGE AND SUCCESS"
McMurrxy College's Upward Bound Project
is the first of its kind in the Big Counr
try. Upward Bound has as its goal, givirg
boys and girls in high school the necessary
skills, experiences, and incentives
to attend college after high school grad.
uation.
The program has just completed its fourth
week of the eight week summer session.
During the past four weeks students
have gone through an educational program
that stresses an "education does not necessarily
begin or stop in a class room.
The principle that education can'be in
various places, a "bull session", a trip,
in the theatre, on a picnic, or in the
college dorm prevails in Upward Bound.
Dedicated college professors, public
school teachers, and college students
are working hard to give the students of
Upward Bound a well rounded education
that will enhance the student's chances
of S to college. __ANGELA

(Restricted to single persons and persons
with a small child.)Upward Bound students come from schools
in a fifty mile radius of Abilene. Presently,
three school systems are'represented.
They are Albany, Breckenridge, and Abilene,On Friday, July 5, the students elected
officers for their student government
organization. Those elected are President-Donald
Burton, Vice-President-Billy
Enriquez, Socretary-Carman Gutierrez, and
Historian-David Hernandez.
During their campaign speeches, one
could hear that American teenagers are
more sincere and honest about this great
country of ours. All canidates expressdd
the troubles of our country, but more important
they expressed a solution and a
belief that Americans will work together
to bring everyone to a greater realization
of American Democracy.
From this reporter's observation, not
only will Upward Bound give skill and incentive
for participation in college but
it will instill the traits of more awa re
ness and responsibility in the participants.NAACP MEETS
