To the editor:
Some people denigrate World War II as "the worst war ever, the
worst," as Ken Burns has while conceding it was a necessary war
{Newsweek, Sept. 24, 2007, p. 57). He refers to the "gallant myth
of the Second World War."
Yes, World War II was most deadly, but it destroyed two evil
tyrannies. The War TV series has much merit, but the millions
of men and women who died fighting these tyrannies cannot rest
easy in today's negative climate.
—Anthony J. Ward [B/56], Pittsburgh (412-531-1546)
To the editor:
I am enclosing this picture of Petty
Officer 1st class Adam Melhuish, the
grandson of the late Erol "Spike" Simons
and Barbara Simons. He is currently
stationed at the Chicago naval base. His
family is very proud of him.
—Barbara Simons, Auburn, MA
Adam Melhuish,
Spike and Barbara Simons' grandson
To the editor:
On pg. 2 of the August HCN, the first column states: "Awards
were given to Bob Grebl and Ward McGill for bravery." The fact is
that I made the presentations to Bob and Dorothy. I did not receive
an award. (The only brave thing I did during the war was to turn
back and retrieve my dropped scarf while retreating in front of
two German tanks that were firing their machine guns at me.)
The caption under the picture should read: "Ward McGill [B/66]
presented awards to Dorothy Shoemaker [C/493] and Bob Grebl
[B/66] at the North Central Chapter meeting ..
—Ward McGill
To the editor:
At our North Central Chapter meeting last June we collected
and donated hygiene products and books for the VA Hospital in St.
Cloud, MN. I received a nice thank-you letter from them. I would
like to pass that message to all who took part in that effort for the
veterans. We will be having the 2008 reunion June 10-13 in St.
Cloud and doing the same thing for the hospital. St. Cloud seems
to be a convenient location for all of us.
—Dorothy Shoemaker, North Central Chapter
To the editor:
Many years ago we had offices of President, Vice President,
and a third office in line to president. This is normal advancing in
the chairs for most organizations, but the 12th ADA eliminated the
third office, leaving two officers in the ladder.
Now that we are older and glad to have the Legacy members
taking on the responsibility, I suggest that the third office be
reinstated to provide backup in the ladder of officers. This third
office will allow a member to gain experience to better handle the
higher offices.

me such terrific support over the past months.
