My Neighbor and I
My neighbor and I
Have known one another for a very long time.
We have in the main lived the same life:
We have read the same papers,
We have seen the same movies,
When I hear something he listens to its echo,
We have chatted many a happy hour away;
YetMy
neighbor and I
Have different creeds,
Diverse beliefs,
Dislike ideas.
Really, I know
That his tenets are largely absurd
And smile
With just a tinge of scorn sometimes.
My neighbor thinks
I'm slightly off, and
Feels
For my infirmities in the upper story.
And as for the
Man who lives across the streetMy
neighbor and I agree
That he's wrong
In doctrine, and we have
A mutual horror of his notionsAlthough
he is a very good sort of a fellow.
Still,
The man across the street, my neighbor and I
See the same sunsets,
Hearken to men who are mere men such as we,
And have one God.
One scoffs a trifleThe
other pities a bitThe
third smiles up his sleeveWe
are very human,
My neighbors and I.
There's only one thing I cannot
Understand.
That is why
My neighbors have such funny ideas
And never see my point.
