Beyond
I gazed up toward a mountain's lofty height
And wished to climb, and, wishing, so began.
Now stumbling, rising up again, I ran,
Hoping indeed, the summit gained, I might
Be done of toil, and from work have respite.
At times my heart grew faint, but the great plan
Of reaching glory made me play the man
And struggle upward to the distant sight.
The summit I had gained. I gave a shout
And viewed my past way with abeyance fond.
My heart grew lighter; not a clouding doubt
Was there behind me-then, but then, I moaned,
For, when I haply turned my face about,
I saw another mountain just beyond.
