SEX DURING PREGNANCY
By Ezra C. Davidson, Jr., MD,
President, The American
College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists
Many couples wrongly believe that
when a woman becomes pregnant,
sexual activity must be stopped or
limited because it may cause harm to
the unborn baby. For a healthy
woman with a normal pregnancy,
however, sexual intercourse can usual-
ly continue into the ninth month of
pregnancy without posing risks for the
mother or the fetus.
In some cases, though, the mother's
condition or her medical history may
suggest that sex could be risky. Doc-
tors may advise women who have had
a previous miscarriage or premature
birth or who have infection, bleeding
or pain with intercourse, or a ruptured
amniotic sac (water bag) to avoid
sexual intercourse for a period of time.
Other sexual activity can usually
continue.
The emotional and physical changes
brought on by pregnancy can affect
the sexual feelings and desires of both
partners. Some women feel increased
sexual desire and enhanced sexual
pleasure during pregnancy, while
othere lose interest in or are more in-
hibited about sex. Fatigue and nausea,
in the first trimester may dampen a
woman's interest in sex. Later,
changes in physical appearance may
cause her to feel unattractive and
decrease her appetite for sex.
Men also are affected by their part-
ner's condition. Some men worry that
they might hurt a woman or harm the
fetus during intercourse. Others have a
hard time adjusting to the woman's
changing feelings and desires or her
new appearance.
To prevent misunderstandings
about sex, you should discuss your
sexual feelings and needs with your
partner throughout your pregnancy.
Working together, you can make
changes in your sexual relations to
satisfy you both.
For many couples, trying new posi-
tions eliminates problems caused by
the woman's changing size. Touching
and caressing is an important way to
maintain closeness if intercourse
becomes too uncomfortable or
abstinence is advised.
Following birth, a couple can usual-
ly resume sexual intercourse in three to
four weeks or once the vaginal open-
ing has healed, bleeding has stopped,
and the woman is comfortable.
Knowing in advance how sexual
relations might change over the course
of pregnancy is the best way to avoid
misunderstandings and frustrations
for both you and your partner. First
find out from your doctor if sexual in-
tercourse is not safe for you and then
share any concerns, problems, or
special needs with your partner so that
you both know what to expect.

IN THE LIOtT
To aake your life worth living,
Keep yourself out of the shadows and into the light.
Kor the light will give you strength,
Mailing your life deeper as each day pass slowly,
By giving you the inspiration that you earn from each
daily task you do.
Character can not be acquired in solitude.
This accomplishment must have a simple beginning,
Starting from within you.
You must develope a love for what you do,
Feeling that it matters not only to you, but to those
around you also.
Showing the fun, the cheer as each day counts into
years,
Leaving members for those who really know that the wise
always profit from what they are advised of.
Accepting a victory, receiving an award,
Knowing that you have done it,
Taking the challenge, making the choice,
Now feeling yourself grow as your life mo>es forward
as long as you —
Keep out of the shadows, steping into the light.
