Building. Changing. Refining. How are
these related?
When we arrived on the Hill for the first
time, we didn't know quite what to expect.
Would this be just another Christian university
that required undergraduate Bible
and daily Chapel garnished with a slick billboard
motto? What lay beneath the words
"Caring, Serving and Excelling?"
They told us, "Abilene grows on you. Stick
it out a year and you'll see." They made it
look good, so we stuck it out. And we saw.
Looking below the surface wasn't always
easy. At times the old tangled with the new
and growth was slow and tedious. Even more
often, what appeared at first an unwelcome
imposition became a surprising improvement.We stood by in horror while our largest
parking lot, formerly the Big Purple Stomping
Ground, shrunk to less than half its original
size. Nonetheless, we watched with pride
as brick by brick the Bible Building that took
