Scholarships makes grad school a reality
aramed after Ronald E. McNair - the first AfricanAmerican
to fly in space - the McNair Scholars
Program federally funded scholarships for students
with dreams of attending graduate school. One of
the seven crew members killed in the space shuttle
Challenger explosion, McNair exemplified a life unrestrained
by obstacles. In commemoration of his
achievements, the U.S. Department of Education established
a program to encourage and prepare low-income,
first-generation college students for graduate-level education.Seventeen ACU students accepted an invitation to join
the Ronald E. McNair Post Bachelorette Achievement
Scholars Program. As McNair scholars, each student
selected a faculty mentor, attended conferences, tutoring
and counseling, and conducted summer research
projects.
Faculty mentors helped the scholars develop research
abstracts, accompanied them to research conferences
and provided guidance on graduate school applications.
Francisca Ortiz, junior psychology major from
Abilene, said, "I chose Dr. Headrick as my faculty
mentor because of his attitude. He is real exciting and I
knew it would be fun to work with him."
Donna Parker, senior vocational home economics
major from Abilene, said, "I appreciate being given the
chance to do research with mentors ... and the special
time they give McNair scholars in preparing for the
GRE."
Gordon Dowell, director of the McNair Scholars
Program, said the program was not exclusive, but mostly
provided valuable guidance for minority students.
Francisca said, "The best thing about the program is
that it offers people who are under-represented in graduate
school the opportunity to do research at an undergraduate
level, and it will improve their chances of getting
into a graduate school."
Federal funds honoring McNair's spirit of achievement
provided students' the opportunity to reach their
once-unreachable stars.A Dwain Hart, provost, addresses the crowd of McNair Scholars and their faculty
