May graduates start life
XT he Tower of Light rang its 2 p.m. chime just like
any other day. But this day's ring cued the familiar
pomp and circumstance, and students robed in
academic splendor filed into Moody Coliseum. With
loved ones on their arms or holding their hands, these
soon-to-be graduates crossed and crossed again until
every chair was filled.
In his charge to the senior class, Steve Weathers,
instructor of English, humorously described the natural
process of life: "an infant - this diaper soiling insomniac
of an infant, an adolescent - this hormonal curfew-oblivious
teenager and a college student - this
loan accumulating, credit card carrying, car maintenance
deferring college student."
Through these images, Weathers reminded seniors
of people who helped bring them to this day by
neglecting their own interests for the interests of these
students. Challenging the seniors to begin putting others
first, Weathers quoted Christina Rossetti's poem,
"The Lowest Room."
Not to be first,
How hard to learn that life long lesson of the past:
Line graven on line, and stroke on stroke,
But thank God learned at last.
Dr. Royce Money, president of the university, conferred
the degrees, and the appropriate hoods were
adorned, before graduates made their traditional walk
across the Moody stage, shaking hands and smiling for
photographs.
Before passing down the senior Bible to Rob
Conner, president of the 1997 senior class, Brian Huff,
1996 senior class president, shared his insight at this
milestone. "Somehow by the incredible mercy of our
Father we can truly stand now and say that He has
been faithful - He is present - He will be with usand
He is God."
