Point of Grace entertains with a positive message
&[ . ,e as Christians live every day at the point of
/ God's grace." With that quote, C.S. Lewis
unknowingly gave a name and a theme to
one of the most popular female vocal groups in
Christian music.
In April, Point of Grace brought a message of purity
and unity to Moody Coliseum through a unique style
and sound. A group of four women in their 20s, Heather
Floyd, Denise Jones, Terry Jones and Shelley Phillips
started out as a small-time college vocal group.
"When we first started," Shelley explained, "we just
wanted to go out for the summer."
But their rendition of traditional four-part harmony
with instrumental accompaniment led them far beyond
one summer. "We felt like God was calling us to continue,"
Shelley said.
Dressed in black and silver satin, the four women
perfected their harmonies and attacked their leads communicating
the message of God to the 1,500 spectators
that filled Moody Coliseum. During the performance,
they solicited support for a Christian home for unwed
mothers and challenged the audience to remain sexually
pure.
"We try not to speak beyond our experience," Terry
said. "We know what God has done for us, and hopefully,
we can encourage others."
The women expressed their enthusiasm about the
rising popularity of Christian music. Denise said, "It's
really exciting. People are finally realizing there's
Christian music that's not from a hymnal."
Amber McElyea, special activities director for the
Students' Association, said the feedback she received
from people who attended the concert was positive. "We
sold the tickets we needed to sell, and everyone enjoyed
it. They loved it!"
Shelley said Point of Grace addressed its message
to Christians and she hoped those who heard it would
carry it to people who did not know God. "By edifying
the church and talking about unity, that will say something
to the secular world."
