Treditia
Homecomrning unites alumni and studentst was a "meeting of generations" according to
Amy Thompson, co-director of the Homecoming
steering committee. Alumni exhibited school
spirit in brilliant purple garb; students wore social
club-letters with pride; prospective students, toddlers
to teen-agers, observed a tradition they may someday
experience.
A warm October Friday afternoon welcomed visitors
to campus, and a colorful collage of booths invited
them to sample funnel cakes, try cookie decorating
and throw glossy-peaked pies at members of the ACU
family.
Later that evening, a blazing bonfire licked the
West Texas sky as Wildcat cheerleaders led the crowd
in shouts of rhythmic encouragement for the football
team. Families and friends relaxed into a weekend of
celebration and reunion.
Saturday came early for social club members as
they gathered for breakfast with their respective
groups, eager to catch up with old friends.
Throughout the day, events planned by the Alumni
Department and dedicated students provided opportunities
for alumni to re-live some fond memories.
During the Saturday morning Homecoming
Parade, campus clubs shouted themes of tradition
with displays ranging from a tissue-papered Mickey
Mouse followed by more than 40 Mouseketeers to a
Coca-Cola bottle drenched in oversized ice cubes.
A special chapel offered a God-focused facet of
ACU tradition and a forum to pay honor to outstanding
alumni and students. Homecoming and Coming
Home Courts made their distinguished walks to the
Moody Coliseum stage. Ko Jo Kai, Galaxy and the
junior class cheered their first-place float victories,
and a myriad of voices joined in the traditional
singing of "The Lord Bless You and Keep You."
"The purpose is to come back to re-kindle feelings
and friendships," Amy said. "Alumni get to see
what is happening on campus, and it gives them a
reason to give back."
Although some participated in reunion dinners
for their classes, traditions of the weekend ended for
most with the crowning of a blushing homecoming
queen and a Wildcat football victory over Tarleton Statescore.
