The award is presented annually to one or more graduating seniors who have overcome signigicant challenges to succeed in
college. The award is named for Dr. Walter H. Adams, dean emeritus, who served as the chief academic officer of the university
from 1931-69.
Tonya Barnwell
Tonya is a history major from Carlsbad, N.M. Although Tonya came to
ACU in the midst of family turmoil and tight finances after the death of
her father, she was determined to make the best of her situation. During
her four years here, she was able to not only heal from her personal
struggles but help others as well. As a student at ACU, Tonya served as
a counselor at World Wide Youth Camps during two of her summers
and was a dedicated member of Mission Church of Christ. Tonya has,
as one person has said, "learned to rely on her fellow Christians and to
truly seek God on her own."
Ryan Campbell
Ryan is a Bible major from Thousand Oaks, Calif. Ryan came to ACU
shortly after a tragic car accident that left him comatose. Doctors predicted
he would not recover. As we all know, Ryan obviously had other
plans. Ryan's physical challenges are not the only obstacles he faced.
Ryan has had to face cultural challenges as well during his years at
ACU. He spent 10 weeks as a summer intern in Chaingmai, Thailand,
and then spent the next summer in Cape Town, South Africa, working
with Christians on that continent. During the past year, Ryan has
worked with people from different cultures on campus as well, hosting
a weekly Bible study for international students.
Aimee Crowl
Aimee is a theatre major from Nairobi, Kenya. Though far from her
home and family in Nairobi, Aimee chose to bring a spirit of home and
family to those around her and has been a steadfast, encouraging and
integral part of ACU and the Theatre Department. During her years at
ACU, she has been active in the weekly Theatre Chapel, participated in
a diversity committee, designed props, served as a stage manager, built
sets and performed in theatre productions, all while keeping a 3.5 GPA.
In addition, Aimee spent her summer last year volunteering at a children's
ministry in Kenya, where she plans to return after graduation.photos courtesy of Chappell Photography
