BA N
OF
BROTHER$
Pi Kappa
S ince its creation in 1996, Pi Kappa's members
continue to build up each other and the club by
encouraging club pride and being involved in
each others lives.
One of the ways the club works on this community
is by keeping the seven promises of the Promise
Keepers.
This mission statement says a Pi Kappa member
is committed to honor Jesus Christ, pursue brotherhood,
practice purity, build Christ-centered relationships,
support the church, reach beyond barriers and
influence the world.
The men of Pi Kappa are indeed influencing the
world through their many service projects.
During the fall, the club went to Pipeline Church
of Christ in Dallas to help with an event called
"Giveaway Day." This was a day where underprivileged
families who were in need could come and get
whatever it was they needed.
"You name it, they had it: clothes, coats, jackets,
food, toys, shoes, etc," said club vice president Gip
Keeton. "Their church donated all this. Homeless
people spent the night there just so they could be first
in line. We got to guide the families through the lot,
pick out what they need and put their things in a
loading area. We got to visit with them on a one-onone
basis as we helped them. It was pretty cool."
During the spring semester, the club chose Central
Dallas Ministries as its work of service.
The men did jobs like stocking the food
pantry, painting and doing yard work.
This hard labor might have inspired the
member's Sing Song production. In their
fourth year to participate, the men of Pi
Kappa did their show as Paul Bunyan.
"Sing Song to us isn't as much about
what you do on stage, it's more about being
amongst your brothers and doing the best
you can," said Alan Wages, president of the
club.Homecoming was an exciting time for the club.
Its float was a large purple heart that had World War
II veterans riding on it to honor them for what they
did for the country.
Since the club is so new, the breakfast for the
alumni is a unique time. Most of those who are seniors
now were in club with the alumni. This made for
a comfortable and close atmosphere.
The club added 18 pledges this year. "They are
awesome," Alan said. "The new guys are a really
good group."
Each of the pledge activities has a purpose to
illustrate the seven commitments a Pi Kappa must
make. One way to show the men what their club is
all about is to do service events that emphasize the
importance of brotherhood.
This service pledge activity was helping at a golf
course hosting a benefit for Healing Hands International.Pi Kappa emphasizes service to others and tried
to always keep in mind its motto verse, Philippians
2:1-2: "If you have any encouragement from being
united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if
any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one is spirit
and purpose."
