the clinic minister to their patients better.
"They wanted to develop a better system of data collection
and management for the future, so our students did that work,"
McKelvain said. "They statistically analyzed the data and gave a
report to Professor Dulcet and other staff members. which was
doubly impressive because they did it all in Spanish."
All in all
Kevin Kehl, associate director of the Center of International
and Intercultural Education, went to Montevideo with the group
for the first week to make sure they would adjust to the culture
and other shocks they might encounter.
"The opportunities that they had about doing some really
hands-on clinical experience was unparalleled," Kehl said. "It
was incredible. The program combines travel, study and internship
in a way to process the information in terms of real practical
experience.
"This particular group was extremely mature," he said.
"They were very impressive in how they conducted themselves."
Sonja Barcus, assistant professor of psychology and the
incoming adviser for the class, agreed.
"I think they did incredibly well. They had a lot of challenging
situations," she said. "They grew from the experience. It was
hard - it wasn't fun - it was a challenge."
McKelvain said he knew that the students learned about
themselves and a different culture.
"The actual substance of what they were doing was to learn
more and have the opportunity to work with people side by side,
with people from a different country, with different ways of
doing things.
"The attitude of, 'We will do this,' and the amount of work
they did went beyond expectations."
