Dear TSGS Members, Partner Societies, and Friends,
Plans for the 38th TSGS Annual Conference are almost complete. We will be meeting on the 6th
and 7th of November at the College Station Hilton Hotel and Conference Center at 801 University
Drive East, College Station, Texas. Our featured speaker for Saturday's session will be Leslie
Smith Collier and our featured speakers for Friday's mini-sessions will be Richard Hooverson, John
Sellers, and John Wylie. I did receive a "real scare" when the hotel called to say that TSGS might
have to change the dates for the conference due to a football game between Texas A&M and
Oklahoma being scheduled that weekend. Doris Cozart and I promptly drove to College Station to
meet with Julie Harrington of the Hilton sales staff. Arrangements were worked out; however, if
you wish a room in the hotel, make sure that your hotel reservation is in before 6 October 1998. to
insure the room rate and the availability of a room. I am sure that there will be very few hotels
with open rooms in College Station that weekend, so make your plans early. There is a conference
registration page in this edition of STIRPES. I look forward to seeing many of you at the
conference.
How about an update on Texas First Families? When I proposed this project and volunteered to be
chairperson, I did not realize that it would take three years to complete the first phase. I have
checked 4,575 applications, issued the certificates for those who qualified, and have written
letters concerning the documentation needed to those who did not qualify. The program is still
open and all who complete the requirements during 1998 should be in the proposed book. The
second phase of copying the cover page and the lineage page of each application has begun. Doris
Cozart and Ann Rickard recently spent a week with me to help with the copying. We have copied
1502 thus far. I hope this phase will be completed this summer. When the copying is completed,
we will be able to give the applications in the ten file cabinets to a closed stack library. The typing
of the lineages for the book will be done from the copied pages. Doris Cozart and I have met with
one printer about publishing the material. We plan to get bids from several companies and choose a
publisher. There will be approximately 800 pages of lineages and 300 pages of an index so it may
be necessary to publish in two or three volumes. I did not realize the number of decisions to be
made, so ... someday, you should receive a letter concerning the cost and availability of the book or
books. I hope that this can be accomplished in 1999.
If you have not entered the 1998 TSGS Writing Awards Competition, please consider doing so.
Almost all genealogists have enough material to write about an ancestor or a family. If you do not
plan to write a book, please enter a manuscript. This is one way to preserve your research. Partner
societies and family associations should send in their newsletters and quarterlies. Information
concerning these awards is published in this edition of STIRPES. All entries must be received by 1
September 1998. Awards will be presented at the Awards Banquet on Friday, 6 November 1998, in
College Station, Texas.
