The Convention re-assembled, pursuant to adjourmentnet
at the Christian Church, in Nashville, on Monday, Noveni-
ber 11, 1850, and was called to order by Gen. Pillow. of Ten-
nessee; on whose motion, Gov. Charles J. McDonald, of
Georgia, the Vice President, took the chair, when he address-
ed the Convention as follows:
GENTLEMEN OF TIlE CONVENTION:
Circumstances have devolved on me the unexpected duty
of presiding over your deliberations. I bring no experience
to the performance; but, in undertaking to discharge it, I
console myself with the reflection, that I have before me
wisdom, intelligence, and generosity, capable of aiding me
in its execution, and ready to make allowance for any errors
I may commit.
It may not be unsuitable to the occasion for me to add,
that when we went hence in June last, we departed with the
ardent hope, that the claims which we spread before the
country for the States represented by us, being so just and
reasonable, would have been met by the public authorities
in a spirit of conciliation and peace, and that they, by giv-
ing them effect, would have restored confidence between the
dfferent sections of the country. Had that been the case,
we should now have had the agreeable duty to perform of
congratulating ourselves on the just result of our labors,
and of sending forth our greetings to men of the East, the
North, and the West, for so happy a- consummation, and of
proclaiming to them that we hold them, now, as brethren,
