DOCUMENT GIVES GLIMPSE
OF HENDERSON PEOPLE FIFTY YEARS AGO

Workman remodeling the Masonic Lodge Building on the public square yesterday
entered the cornerstone and found two articles that proved to be the center
of interest as they were displayed on the streets. One was a whiskey bottle,
broken in all probability when the building settled. The other was a list of
prominent citizens and business houses in Henderson at the time the building was
erected in 1884. Written on the business stationery of S. J. and J. H. MIMS,
staple and fancy groceries, whiskies, wines, brandies, etc., the memorandum and
names are as follows:
"S. J. and J. H. MIMS began building this brick July 28, 1884. Below I
will give you some of the most prominent names of our town, their avocation,etc.:
"James H. JONES, member of congress, Cale GARRISON, representative to legislature,
James GARRISON, state's attorney, and a host of lawyers, such as Nathan
BABLEY, FIELD and BUFORD, Martin CASEY, J. H. WOOD, Ned MORRIS, Hugh STONE, W. W.
SPIVEY, J. H. TURNER; county officers, Jack SMITH, county judge; Joe GRAHAM,
county attorney; Thad BREWER, sheriff; Ben DICKINSON,county clerk; Joe SMITH,district
clerk; Wm. RICHARDSON, tax assessor; Tom PARKER, tax collector; J. T.
MADDOX, county treasurer; Wm. DAVIS, justice of peace; Jim COBB, bailiff; merchants,
BLANTON & NUNNALL Co., groceries and drygood; Parker WINDLE, groceries;
STILL & LACY, general merchandise; Gus MEYER, saddler an harness maker; W. H.
COMPTON, saloon; DOUGLAS & CRIM, livery stable men; Rusk County News Office; J. J.
HAMMERSTEIN, blacksmith; Charley SMITH, livery and hotel man; John MOORE, groceries
and confectionaries; Lem STONE, groceries; W. S. MOSS, general merchandise;
Ed BARTHOLD, drygoods and notions; Wm. McMurray, saloon man; CRAIG and STEWART,
hardware; Geo. GROSDANICH, groceries and whiskey; DOTSON & NORVELL, drygoods and

J. F. MERRITT, saloon; A. WETTERMARK, banker; C. S. ROGERS, drygoods
and groceries; W. A. WOODALL, lager beer; NEAL, HILL & Co., drygoods and groceries;
F. W. PETTY, druggist; John WHITESIDES, groceries; JAMES CLAIBORNE, groceries;
D. PRESTON, general dealer; S. M. & J. H. MIMS, groceries and whiskey; Dr.
IRBY, druggist; E. J. TELLER, blacksmithing and woodwork; James H. McLARTY, drygoods
and groceries; D. R. BRADLEY, hotel man. This is written by Sterling MIMMS."
The building later was owned by Duncan PRESTON, whose heir, John PRESTON,
sold it.to the Clinton Lodge No. 23 of this city. The building was purchased
by the Masons on March 30, 1893, the sale being made by G. C. WOOD, attorney in
fact for John PRESTON. The building has been owned by the Lodge for forty years
according to other records. Work is now progressing to beautify and modernize
it inside and out, and when completed, the building will be one of the most
attractive in the city.
