PANOLA OOUTY - LIThEE PRMIIT IE BAPTIST CHUCH, 1848-1958
by Leila B. LaGrone
Carthage, Texas
Little Hope Primitive Baptist Church was constituted in East Panola County
on July 29, 1848. Some of its earliest settlers in the Midyett-Springs area
were members of that church. Minutes of the organizational meeting have been
preserved.
The organization took place in the home of Joseph and Mary Pelham. The
first church building was a pioneer log structure near Furrh Cemetery, just off
present State Highway 31. Here it continued, with various improvements made on
the building, until 1922. There was also a nearby postoffice, called Furrh,
from 1898 to 1917.
In 1922 a new church building was erected on land donated by G. D. Hickey
and wife on the Keatchi road, now called Farm Road 123. There it remained for
at least thirty-five years.
The church celebrated its 100th Anniversary in July 1948. Elder Fred
Janeway was pastor in charge of arrangements.
Soon after the 100th Anniversary celebration, the members decided to move
the building back to Furrh Cemetery, near the original location. There it remained
as membership dwindled through old age and death of loyal members. In
the original "Articles of Faith of Little Hope Church" dated 1848, one declaration
was, "This church forever disclaims all connection with all the modern
Missionary Societies by whatever name called."
By 1960 the membership had gone down to two or three and they decided to
disband and sell the building, using the money for cemetery improvements.
Descendants of Little Hope Church Members would treasure a list of the
membership. The following is the most accurate list that can be compiled from
the records still existing:
Eight names were on the Charter Roll: ROBERT JARMAN, ELIZA JARMAN, LAVINAH
JARMAN, SARAH HOLT, ELIZABETH LANGFORD, SARAH ANDERSON, JOSEPH PELHAM AND MARY
PELHAM.
