THE BIRD WATCHER'S AMERICA,
edited by Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr., illustrated
by John Henry Dick, published
by McGraw-Hill, New York, 441 pps.,
$7.50
No other hobby-profession in the world
arouses more enthusiasm and dedication
than bird watching or ornithology.
And this is perfectly understandable.
There's probably more variety in the bird
kingdom than in any other group of critters.
In size, birds range from a ball of
feathers no larger than the cotton of an
aspirin bottle to the gigantic 300-pound ostrich.
The amateur bird watcher and professional
ornithologist are noble breeds of
people. A dedicated bird lover would never
waste his vacation visiting Disneyland or
on organized trips to behold manbuilt
contrivances. In all probability, he would
be out in the boondocks with binoculars
and camera and a more than usual look of
satisfaction on his face.
It is for this group of individualists that
The Bird Watcher's America was compiled.
Editor Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr. has
compiled selections from 44 of the country's
top ornithologists, introducing bird

watchers to some of the best places in the
U.S. and Canada.
Each author, in his own individual style,
tells of his favorite haunts and their ornithological
attractions. The selections are
written especially for this book and lead
the reader from the rugged cliffs of Bonaventure
Island, ajong the shadowy canals
of the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia,
through the Everglades of Florida, up the
tropical valley of the Rio Grande, over the
snowy heights of the Colorado Rockies and
from Monterey on the Pacific shore to the
Olympic Peninsula and beyond.
Texas bird watchers are fortunate since
it is in our state that East meets West,
ornithologically speaking, and a greater
variety of birds are found here. Two selections
in the book, "The Valley" and
"Big Bend National Park" are covered very
well. However, the world-famous whooping
crane, who is more than just a casual
visitor to Texas, is covered in short order
in a section entitled "A Virgin Prairie in
Minnesota."
This slight to Texas is understandable
when the scope of the work is considered.
It would take many volumes to completely
cover the United States and Canada.
Writers for the book include George
Miksch Sutton, Roger Tory Peterson, Herbert
Krause, Allan Cruickshank, Fred
Bodsworth, Alexander Sprunt, Ira N. Gabrielson,
and others.
Editor Pettingill, one of the nation's
leading ornithologists, deserves a lot of
credit for the book. He is the author of the
famous Oxford guides to bird watching, director
of the Laboratory of Ornithology at
Cornell University, and a contributing editor
to Audubon Magazine.
Artist John Henry Dick adds to the book
considerably with 50 line drawings of birds
and scenery, which evoke the locales and
birds treated by the writers. .o
