Notes

"Description of Photo: First Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville. This church was erected 1909-08 on property occupied earlier by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, constituted in Sept. 3, 1871, as the New Hope Congregation with 10 charter members. The Rev. Nicholas A. Davis was the organizing minister, was prominent horitculturist, Civil War veteran, historian of Texas Confederates who fought in earliest Civil War battles in Virginia.

This building was constructed of hand-made cement blocks by C. R. Kelley, who came to Jacksonville to build Lon Morris College (Alexander Collegiate Institute) Twin Towers building, also built earlier First Methodist Church building of same materials, style similar to First Presbyterian Church's. Cornerstone laying for this church was June 22, 1909. This building was succeeded by education building annex in 1950s, present sanctuary in 1960s.

Manse for pastor and family was north of this building on adjoining lot, manse site from days of first church (frame) building. Manse site now occupied by education building. Alley to left of this building still connects S. Bolton and S. Bonner Sts.

Old frame church of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, beginning of this congregation, was sold to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in September on 1910, moved to Canada St., then to Corinth Road and used until present plant was constructed in early 1958 after fire damaged the old frame building. The old frame church was demolished ca. 1959-60 after ending its days as a warehouse for Thompson Funeral Home nearby."
