Notes

"Frances Stevens, candidate for queen; Kathryn Turner, 1940 queen; Fannie Byrd Bolton, candidate for queen; left-right. Miss Stevens was elected queen of the last festival, which was discontinued in 1942 because of World War II. All are married and their married names are, left-right: Mrs. Dan Dodd, Mrs. Billy Jack Nicol, Mrs. Walter Scott Benson. Their parents, in same order: Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Albritton, Mr. and Mrs. George Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Bolton. At this time, 1988, only Mrs. Turner is alive. The laboratory was operated by the Texas Extension Service on land north of Jacksonville on US 79 across from the old Jacksonville airport. Dr. P. A. Young was head of the laboratory, which also carried on studies of diseases of other crops produces in East Texas. The laboratory was closed in the late 1950s after the East Texas tomato industry folded."
