Notes

"Amphitheater at Love's Lookout Park north of Jacksonville on US 69 was built on site donated to State of Texas by the late Mrs. John Wesley Love (1932) for a park. City of Jacksonville and Works Progress Administration developed the scenic spot, built the amphitheater for all types of public gatherings and picnic facilities in the valley below the famed lookout point once part of Love's enormous peach orchards covering about 600 acres in the vicinity. Photo shows construction of first rows of seats in the amphitheater which overlooked stage below. Amphitheater and other facilities were damaged beyond repair in 1970's by landslide and have never been repaired. State maintains comfort station and picnic facilities atop the lookout point. Spot was site of sunrise Easter services sponsored by Jacksonville churches until the facility was damaged beyond repair and use. Plans began in 1988 to redevelop the site for picnic, nature trails, but plans do not include rebuilding amphitheater."
