EXPLORING
EMERGENCY
SERVICE
Emergency service, along with its
many ramifications of search
and rescue, first aid, water safety
and other activities, has long been
associated with Exploring. Now
two new developments have en-
hanced this exciting field.
First is a new working agreement
between the Exploring Division,
BSA, and the United States Office
of Civil Defense. Civil Defense offi-
cials are ready to sponsor special
interest posts and will continue to
give assistance to all Explorer posts
in emergency service projects.
Second is a new book to help
train Explorers in such activities.
It's Exploring Emergency Service,
No. 6609, 64 pages, $ 1.20 at Scout
distributors or council offies.
The book not only includes the
best features of the old Emergency
Preparedness BSA, but also has up-
to-date photos, illustrations and
safety hints. Detailed outlines are
given for four training sessions—
Mobilization and Communication;
Rescue, First Aid and Public
Safety; Emergency Living; and
Water Rescue. Each session out-
line includes liberal resource ma-
terial and ideas for consultants.
Three of the sessions may be con-
ducted during regular post meet-
ings. The fourth—on water rescue
—must be held in a location that
will permit swimming and boating.
Explorer Advisors should plan a
minimum of 90 minutes for each
training session.
Each Explorer who completes the
Emergency Service program re-
quirements will receive a special
certificate, and he may also wear
the Emergency Service armband
while actually rendering service. A
post may be certified as an Emer-
gency Service post when 60 percent
of its membership qualifies for in-
dividual certification. This certifi-
cate must be renewed each year at
charter renewal time.
The Emergency Service Program
is available to all posts, and should
be promoted in every community in
America. X
