PACK MEETING
THE LAYOUT COMMITTEE must begin to set up the
circus banners, ring, seating arrangements, and other
facilities several hours before circus time. Have plenty
of parents so that no one has to work all morning.
Preopening
Have a menagerie, side show, skill booths, and refresh-
ment stand set up for a half hour to an hour before
the starting time of the circus with "Candy Butch" (Cub
Scouts) hawking peanuts and popcorn during the circus
and in full swing after the show. The sideshow should in-
clude the pack's fat lady, strong man, giant, two-faced boy,
Siamese twins, and other unusual attractions. See page 55
for ideas.
The menagerie should include an animal or two from
each den (page 55). The skill booths might have any of the
games on pages 34-39 of the Den Chiefs Denbook or others
your Cub Scouts enjoy.
Obtain an amplifying system. Play lively marches and
circus band or calliope music during the "Preopening."
Opening
Have a grand entry of all the circus performers and
animals to the accompaniment of stirring music.
Featured Acts
The ringmaster announces the acts in flowery circus
language. The Den Leader coach should give him a sum-
mary of each act a few days before circus day to allow
time to prepare appropriate introductions, with plenty of
adjectives and phrases like "magnificent," "death-defying,"
"first appearance in this country," etc.
Webelos Den Demonstration
Have Webelos den, demonstrate the projects and skills
from activity areas. Integrate the demonstrations into the
circus theme. The Webelos Scouts do not have to dress up
as circus performers, but their demonstrations should
incorporate showmanship.
Recognition
The ringmaster makes advancement awards and inducts
new Cub Scouts, using circus language. He might speak
of taming the wild Wolf or Bear, subduing the Bobcat,
or mastering difficult skills.
Closing
The ringmaster announces the theme for next month
and date, time, and place of the pack meeting. He thanks
all who aided in preparing the circus.
While recorded patriotic music is playing, have all the
performers circle the ring in the traditional blowoff or
finale and parade out.
Cleanup
The cleanup committee (perhaps with the aid of a We-
belos den) makes sure that all circus paraphernalia is re-
moved and that the grounds are put back in order.
April Pack Leaders1 Meeting
The pack's annual program planning conference, in
which the pack's plans for the next 12 months are made,
should be held in April.
Combine that meeting with the April pack leaders' meet-
ing. The suggested theme for May (Cub Scout Program
Help* 1972-73) will be "Beautiful America."
