The abused
child will
grow up
someday.
Maybe.
Each year, over 2,000 American
children die from child abuse.
But what about those who survive?
An abused childhood can affect a
person's entire life.
Yet child abuse can be prevented.
The National Committee for
Prevention of Child Abuse is a private
charitable, organization that knows how
to do it. But we need your help. We need
money. We need volunteers. Send us
your check today. Or write for our booklet.
Because if we don't all start somewhere,
we won't get anywhere.

with boys and try to recruit a new den
leader. The second is to have a den leader
of another den take over until a replace-
ment can be recruited. Be sure to hold
onto the boys; once they drop out, they
are hard to get back.

Recently our pack had the same prob-
lem. We divided up the boys and put them
into other dens. My den took two of the
boys, and we were glad to have them.

Recruiting volunteers always seems to
be difficult, especially when you need
them most. More often than not, parents
are afraid to take that first step because
they wouldn't know what to do. So here's
a way to break the ice gently and hope-
fully recruit new leaders.
First, call a special meeting of the den's
parents. Display simple crafts the boys
have made and show them where such
ideas may be found in Cub Scouting liter-
ature. I emphasize "show" because it
gives the parents something to look at and
not just words to go into one ear and out
the other. Show a list of local establish-
ments that offer tours to Cub Scout dens.
Invite the parents to sit in on another
den's meeting so they can see how much
fun it really is. Show them that den meet-
ings are preplanned using the Cub Scout
or Webelos Scout Program Helps.
Have an inspirational closing on the
value of Cub Scouting. Point out that it
takes volunteers to make this program
work and urge them to try it because it
will be the experience of a lifetime.
Den Leader T.K.P.
Anderson, Ind.
Incorporate the leaderless den with an-
other den for the duration of the program
year. Our pack did this successfully by
requesting time and talent from the par-
ents of the other den.
Each of the two dens had its own
number and separate paperwork, which
the parents handled, but den meetings
and outings were held together. It was a
large group, but it went very well because
of careful coordination and devotion of
the parents. I think that this is an excellent
way to encourage team spirit of families
and cultivate confidence in parents who
are hesitant about taking on the position
of den leader.
