u\kl e're her© to plan the chili
W supper, as you know," be-
gan Fran, chairman of the committee
meeting.
"Say," said Adele, "did you see that
recipe for chili in Thursday's paper?
Not to change the subject, but actually
it wasn't the chilj that caught my eye.
Right next to it was a recipe for apple
pie."
"Pief Not to change the subject, but
who has time for baking?" asked
Doris. "I may never again, if I always
keep this busy. The hospital auxiliary
is driving me crazy."
"Not to change the subject," Liz
broke in, "but aren't you in on that
benefit ball? What's the theme going
to be, or is it a secret?"
"Not to change the subject," chair-
man Fran said softly, "but how about
the chili supper?"
A few blank faces turned toward her,
as though she were a complete
stranger who had wandered into the
room by mistake. Feeling indeed
strange, and a bit out of things, Fran
heard yet another voice.
"Not to change the subject," Madge
said, "but have you noticed how many
x-rated movies are in town? There's
nothing you can take your kids to."
All turned to Madge, leaving Fran
muttering to herself, "From apple pie
to x-rated movies." Closing her file
folder labeled Chili Supper, chairman
Fran reflected that her role in this
meeting-was about as forward-moving
as treading quicksand.
The not-to-change-the-subject-but-
l-will syndrome is just one of the many
ills most meetings suffer. It and other
ailments result in large amounts of
time spent in accomplishing very little.
And whether it is a group of women
planning a chili supper, a group of
men on the Y board, or a group of
pack committee people, they're all
susceptible.
You know the story. You agree to be
part of a committee or organization
and appear at your first meeting, at
least willing, if not eager, to get
started.
Two people present haven't seen
each Other for (continued on page 49)
