The Inside Story
It's that time of year again, when
the icy grip of Old Man Winter is
slowly giving way to spring and to
all those activities in the outside world
that you may have been postponing
since the last of the warm weather
disappeared last fall.
As the ground thaws and the snow
melts, all of us feel the urge to get out
of doors and commune with nature.
How pleasant this communion
turns out to be will depend to a great
extent on how well prepared you are
for outdoor life. No matter how
severe your case of "cabin fever" may
be, far more severe problems may
await you outside unless you're
careful.
This issue of Exploring tells you all
you ever wanted to know about
boots, socks, and general foot care in
preparation for the first hiking and
climbing expeditions of the spring.
You'll want to read it before you hit
the trail.
We'll also tell you how to select
outdoor and camping equipment that
will, with proper care, last a lifetime
—not just a season or two. It will not
only add to your comfort, safety, and
enjoyment outdoors, but will also
save you money in the long run.
We'll tell you something about how
to obtain and use topographic maps
for your next adventure in an "un-
charted" American wilderness which
is really much better charted than you
may have imagined.
If outdoor activities leave you with
a huge appetite but little enthusiasm
for outdoor cooking, we'll introduce
you to that historical implement
called the Dutch oven and show you
how it can take a lot of the guesswork
out of campfire cookery.
Also, we'll tell you how to avoid the
perils of mountain sickness, take you
on a real-life mountain rescue mis-
sion, offer you some valuable pointers
on leadership training, and fill you in
on a host of coming events.
There's plenty of action ahead this
spring—so get set to spring into
action! H
