SPECIAL EVENTS
For each of the 16 PROGRAM FEA-
TURES in this edition of Scout Pro-
gram Helps, there is a suggested SPE-
CIAL EVENT to climax the troop's
concentration on that feature. But
these events are ideas only—not
plans engraved in stone—and your
troop leaders' council may want to
substitute other special events for one
or more of the program features you
adopt at your troop's annual planning
conference.
Three possible special events are
offered in this section: a Good Turn
for your sponsor, activities for Scout
anniversary month (February), and
weekend tours. These activities may,
of course, be used in addition to the
monthly special event.
At the end of this section, you will
also find ideas for special events for
troops that have a leadership corps.
PARTNERSHIP GOOD TURN
The institution or group of citizens
which sponsors your troop is in part-
nership with the Boy Scouts of Amer-
ica. Your sponsor provides a meeting
place and adult leadership; the Boy
Scouts of America supplies the pro-
gram and makes available necessary
materials, uniforms and equipment.
Thus, your sponsor is an essential
member of the partnership that brings
Scouting to your troop. It is easy to
forget this and take for granted the
service given by the sponsor, partic-
ularly when the same institution has
sponsored Scouting for many years.
The best way to express the troop's
gratitude for the sponsor's service is
through a Partnership Good Turn.
Such a special event benefits the
Scouts as well as the sponsor be-
cause it helps train them in the re-
sponsibilities of citizenship.
What form the Good Turn takes
depends on your sponsor's needs.
Probably the best procedure to follow
is for the troop leaders' council to de-
cide on two or three possible Good
Turns and then consult with the head
or chief executive of the sponsor. Let
him choose among the possibilities,
or perhaps suggest something even
more useful to the institution. Don't
decide without consulting him that
you're going to landscape the institu-
tion's grounds or paint the basement.
The governing board of the institution
may already have made other plans.
If your sponsor is a school, or a
PTA, and you want to do something
to improve the school building or
grounds, you probably will need the
permission of the board of education,
not just the principal or PTA board.
This may take some time, so suggest
your plan well before the date.
Here are a few Partnership Good
Turns that have been done by many
troops:
• MAINTENANCE. Rake leaves, clean
windows, general grounds cleanup,
plant shrubbery, build shelving, sim-
ple painting jobs, simple furniture
repair.
• MAKING BUILDING MODEL. Make
scale model of sponsor's proposed
new building for display to member-
ship of the institution.
• PARKING STUDY. Conduct parking
survey at sponsor's building, includ-
ing interviews with sampling of mem-
bers to determine attitudes about
parking problems; then recommend
improvements to institution's govern-
ing board.
• SPECIAL EVENTS SERVICE. For
the institution's major events, provide
ushers, wait on tables, serve refresh-
ments, wash dishes, entertain, con-
duct flag ceremony, check wraps, set
up messenger service.
• BIKE SAFETY PROGRAM. For a
school or PTA sponsor, schedule a
bicycle inspection, plan bike circus,
offer illuminating tape for bikes.
• BUY EQUIPMENT. Plan and oper-
ate money-earning projects to buy
books for library, film projector, radio
or television set, record player, hymn
books, other needs.
• OFFICE HELP. Make posters, run
mimeograph, address, mail and stuff
envelopes.
Many other useful suggestions will
be found in Citizenship Through Ser-
vice, No. 3707.
