Follow these easy steps for
DYE-CRAFT with RIT.
General Instructions:
T-Shirts and Tanks: Cotton or nylon. Nylon gives
best color results.
Materials: Rubber bands, squeeze bottles, Liq-
uid Rit®Dyes, large pots (no Teflon) and rubber
gloves.
Standard Procedures: First wash and rinse
garments. Squeeze in towel, or in spin cycle of
washer. Work on wet fabric. Simmer (don't boil)
for Vi hour in dye.
Dyes and Dyeing: Shake liquid dyes and mix
powdered dye solutions well. Use Liquid Rit Dye
for "pour-on" technique and transfer dye to
squeeze bottle (e.g. hair coloring squeeze bot-
tle from variety store). Add a few drops of liquid
detergent. Keep these bottles of dye in hot water
until ready to use. Hot dyes give best color.
Rinsing: Rinse while still tied under cool run-
ning wateruntil water runs clear. Re-rinseuntied.
Helpful Hints: "Pour-on" can be messy. Work
on protected surface. Keep wiped clean. Re-
move stains with bleach. Dry fabric in dryer or
drip dry. Iron while still damp. Cover ironing
board with a cloth to protect it.

This T-Shirt shows you the simplest Dye-Craft
techniques —donut knots and wind-up knots.
Instructions are included in the Dye-Craft book-
let. See offer, below.
Running
Brave
• Lay T-Shirt (wet) flat on work surface.
• Using felt tipped pen, mark the "running fig-
ure" dot design (diagram 1) 1" down from neck-
line on front of shirt.
• Make tiny rosette knots along design lines
using each dot as the center of a rosette knot.
To make rosette, pinch up a tiny puff of fabric
and secure base of puff with a tightly wrapped
small rubber band, (diagram 2)
• 11/2 inches below running figure, make a hori-
zontal row of tiny rosette knots, banding each
tightly. Make each knot about IV2 inches apart,
(diagram 3)
• Make four more rows of rosette knots, making
knots in each row slightly larger than those in
the row above it. Make rows about an inch apart.
• Immerse T-Shirt in simmering Black dye solu-
tion for 30 minutes, stirring often.
• For rinsing, see General Instructions.
Snake
Skin
• Lay shirt flat on work surface.
• Cover with wind-up knots placed as close as
possible. To make wind-up knot, pick a small
puff of fabric with one hand and wind from top
to bottom with rubber band. Knots are easy to
get close together when they are tied on alter-
nate sides of fabric (diagram 1).
• Loosely wind several more rubber bands be-
tween knots to make bundle more compact
(diagram 2).
• Make Cocoa Brown dye solution (V2 cup liquid
or one package powder in medium pot).
Squeeze in a little liquid detergent. Simmer.
• Immerse banded fabric in Cocoa Brown dye
solution, hold it down with spoon until bubbles
escape. Stir. Remove in two minutes. Rinse,
while banded, in cold running water.
• In pot containing boiling water to cover shirt,
dissolve 1 tablespoon Rit Color Remover. Insert
banded shirt and hold down with spoon for 2
minutes, or until knots turn golden color.
• Wash in hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly.
• For rinsing, see General Instructions.

Criss-Cross
* T-Shirt
• Fold shirt in half down front and place flat on
work surface.
• Draw a dotted line parallel with shoulder from
just below neck opening to hem of sleeve (dia-
gram 1). Gather along line in 1" pleats and fasten
tightly with rubber band. Gather along hem in
1" pleats which line up with those above and
fasten tightly with rubber band (diagram 1). Pull
pleats taut and hold middle in place with rubber
band. Starting at top, wind a long rubber band
very tightly from dotted line down shirt starting
another where first band left off, and so on (dia-
gram 2). To achieve diamond shapes, wind the
rubber bands evenly, crossing them only over
the edges of pleats and under no circumstances
let the pleats get out of line.Tie the bands more
tightly than in diagram. Pour a few drops of
water on the dotted line.
• Using plastic squeeze bottle, drip Evening
Blue Liquid Rit Dye from top of shoulder to 2"
below (diagram 3). Work in with fingers to be
sure dye penetrates all thicknesses. Drip and
work in Scarlet Liquid Rit Dye between blue
and rubber band. Work it into pleats. Colors
should form straight lines which touch but don't
overlap. Cover the blue area with tightly wound
rubber bands. Cover the scarlet in same manner
(diagram 3). Cover the entire colored area with
plastic wrap and wind with rubber bands to
make waterproof.
• In a pot containing enough hot water to sub-
merge bundle without crowding, dissolve V2
package Gold Rit Dye and 3 drops dishwashing
detergent. Submerge bundle 10 minutes then
remove. Put into the same pot to which V2 pack-
age Rit Cocoa Brown has been added. Simmer
40 minutes stirring often. Remove. Rinse in cold
running water until it runs clear. Untie, rinse
blue areas then red areas, before untying and
rinsing body of shirt.
Pinto
Pony
Note: This design is shown on a home-sewn
poncho. The directions below can be used for
fabric or a T-Shirt, but simmer T-Shirt only 30
minutes.
• Place 31/2 yd. length of fabric (wet) or a wet
T-Shirt on work surface. Gather up very irregular
puffs of fabric and fasten each extremely tightly
at bottom with rubber band (see diagram 1).
Pour a little hot water around rubber bands. In
a squeeze bottle mix one tablespoon Scarlet
Liquid Rit Dye, V2 bottle Yellow Liquid Rit Dye,
4-8 oz., water and two drops liquid detergent.
Pour mixture over puffs, work in with fingers.
Add 3 or 4 drops undiluted Rit Scarlet to top of
each puff. Cover all with tightly wound rubber
bands (see diagram 2).
• In large pot (3 gallon) with hot water to cover
bundle, dissolve one package or V3 bottle Cocoa
Brown Rit Dye. Submerge bundle and simmer
1-11/2 hours.
• For rinsing, see General Instructions.
Earth Pattern
Pillow
• Wash two 20" circles of rayon acetate and lay
flat on work surface.
• Pinch up fabric at center of one of the circles.
Band tightly in four places (diagram 1). Spread
bands apart slightly. Repeat with second circle.
• Using eye dropper, drop undiluted Kelly Green
Rit Liquid Dye into folds under and around
banding (diagram 2).
• Add several more tightly wrapped bands over
colored areas.
• Simmer fabric in large pot of Yellow Rit Dye
solution for 30 minutes. Rinse under cold water.
• Tightly wrap several bands between first band-
ings (diagram 3).
• Simmer fabric in large pot of Rit Tangerine
Dye solution for 30 minutes.
• For rinsing, see General Instructions.
